What books do you like?

I am a new christian and am very excited about learning more about GOD. I am a 23 year old male. Ive only read one book so far. "23 Minutes in Hell". It was recommended by my cousin a couple of years ago, I never read it, but then I bought it, and I really believe the story. I also bought Joel Osteen book and Living a new life book. Also, I have couple of Joel Osteen's DVDs. I really enjoy Mr. Osteen because he encourages me to be a better person.

I was wondering if anyone else had a better "christian living" book that is highly recommended?

I feel Joel Osteen only touches on a small part of GOD and seems to be more of a motivator. I have no complaints about the guy, but I think im looking in a direction of more on GOD instead of motivation.

Hi Jack, here are some of my very favorites that are unquestionably God oriented:

Knowing God ... J. I. Packer
Concise Theology ... J. I. Packer
Chosen By God ... R. C. Sproul
Faith Alone ... R. C. Sproul
Mere Christianity ... C. S. Lewis
The Screwtape Letters ... C. S. Lewis

All are excellent reads and most, save Packer's Theology, you will probably read many times. The theology I recommended because it's an excellent guide book to have around for the new Christian and the old. When you read the Word or hear your pastor discuss terms like "transcendence", "omniscience", "sanctification", "justification", and/or "the unpardonable sin" … just to name a few … and you'd like to know what the terms actually mean, this book is for you.

Faith Alone and Chosen By God are historical and theological works dealing with subjects like Election, Predestination, Justification, Salvation, and some historic controversies that surrounded those subjects in the church. They are both extremely well written and, at least in my case, impossible to put down.

The Screwtape Letters is actually a collection of short stories (which I believe were first read on air as part of a radio broadcast in England) where the main characters are demons. It’s a captivating, frightening, and vey important look into the unseen spiritual world that surrounds us.

Lastly, Knowing God and Mere Christianity are ... well, just make sure you get them and read them. They are certainly considered two of the great classics in Christian literature and are a must read for any Christian.
