Tess of the D'Ubervilles.

One Day by David Nicholls.
It's one of my favourite classic novels. There was a TV adaptation on here a couple of years ago, and that was just as good. I really feel for Tess.
I'm a big fan of Nicholls. Have you read his two earlier works, Starter for Ten and The Understudy?
I read Tess of D'urbervilles a few months ago and thought it was remarkable. It's my favorite Hardy so far. He has to be a pretty fierce competitor for most beautiful English language prose. And unlike in Jude the Obscure, which I put down in disgust after 100 pages, he's not totally manipulating his characters to make his moral point. There's a lot of manipulation but it's a little more subtle. Tess is almost an actual character at times and not just a symbol.
What didn't you like about it?
I should, Melissa. Then I'm not left with books I didn't really like and won't read again.
