I have Gear Krieg, only played it once. Entire party died, oops.

I prefer Shadowrun and Earthdawn to D&D. Shadowrun's step system with exploding dice is very good.

And for those that like D&D, play Hackmaster, it's a playble parody. Very fun, but has by far more rules than D&D ( actually resembles 1st and 2nd Ed D&D ).

Shadowrun's another system that grinds to a halt in a big gunfight, especially when the full auto rules come into play. Also, running a decker while trying to keep the rest of the group from getting bored can be difficult. I think one could do Shadowrun-esque campaign world with d20 Modern fairly easily.

D20 often grinds to a virtual stop in large confrontations as well. Though 3rd is better then 2nd (thankfully). Storyteller (white wolf) can adapt pretty easily I've found. Though you do kinda need to do something about botches. I made a few rule changes. But really if you want to do Shadowrun style I'd suggest mage. With Technocracy rules you could really easily do a Shadowrun style. D20 modern is ugly IMO, their rules were never meant for modern stuff.

3E can do pretty well with a large fight, as long as you have reasonably experienced players.

Just starting yet another new game of D&D tonight. Woo!
Yeah, but that's a bit of an if there. WOD actually is pretty slow if they players don't know what they're doing so... yeah. That's why I like non-combat based RPGs.

Don't like D&D. Played it a number of times with a NonChristian DM, and always came to moral objections with the game. So we tried to make special rules to accomodate me so I could play, then came to the realization that if I have to make special rules so I could play it, it probably isn't the best use of my time in the first place.

When I did play it, I was always a NG Cleric which served the One True God (I cant stand the polythesim), and it just came to a spot where it was too much. God convicted me and I left the game.

Didn't anyone use thier destiny dice, I once used that to save my life by sending it all into bullet time.

As for D&D I've just started a new game of it, unfortunatly the DM's so bad me and another player decided to make our characters fall in love

an example of how bad is she is that you get magic items for no reason, you just find rooms full of treasure chests.

I've got the feeling that adventure will end very soon.

Game Mastering is a loaded gun, isn't it? Not only must the GM have a good grasp of the rules, they must also be a good storyteller, director and wrangler. They have to be able to think on the fly, judge the party's playing style and set the threat level high or low enough to entertain.

No wonder so many people have very polarized views of each roleplaying game. I'd wager most of it has to do with the quality of the GM they played with.

Interesting. Your experience sounds like nearly the opposite of mine.

I once played a monotheist fighter who devoted most of his time to trying to become a paladin. That was a pretty good quest.

I don't see why you'd need special rules to play D&D. I mean, what kinds of moral objections are you talking about? There's not much in the game that I see as problematic. I just started in a new game where I'm playing a very smart assassin. He's sane, he's smart... From that much, we know it's going to be a redemption story. I was gonna play a good character, but we've got a newbie in the group, and he's mostly a hack-and-slash gamer, and I think he'll learn a lot from watching a redemption story play out. I think he may be at a time in his life where he's about ready to look for such stories.

If I went and preached at him, there'd be little reason for him to listen. But if he watches as Niles, who is undeniably very smart, and currently totally paranoid and amoral, gradually develops ethics and eventually becomes religious, I think he'll learn a lot from that.

Niles?

Does Fraiser play too?

Or am I watching far too much tv?

No relation. We were looking for a vaguely British-sounding name to fit with the style of names in a country, and Niles was what we came up with.

If my wife's novels ever get published, one of them will probably be the story of Niles, who started out as a "retired" mobster (think "dropped into a freezing river with his throat slit") and ended up being a force for good.

just look at the history of this and other forums here. In terms of our faith, most of us here think its like any othe pasttime, as long as it doesn't dominate your waking life, it's ok.
I totally agree its just like watching a movie like that. As long as you dont let it run your life its fine. Its just a game. Some ppl take it way to serious sometimes though.
