I'm eating disordered, so my reasons might be different then other peoples, but here you go...

x. because I feel I'm supposed to want to be thin
x. because many people seem to think a thin woman is more beautiful and desireable than an overweight or even normal weight woman
x. because the best clothes seem only to come in smaller sizes and a lot of junior-type fashions, which I like to wear, aren't available for heavier women
x. I feel more confident about myself the thinner I get
x. because one gets complimented when they lose weight, but no one ever says "you've gotten fat, you look fabulous!"
x. because thinness is associated with being successful, controlled and having strong will power, while being overweight is sometimes thought of as being sloppy, lazy or unable to control oneself.
x. because there doesn't seem to be much room for heavier women in society, especialy with all those "no fat chicks" bumper stickers
x. because people insult women who are overweight
x. because I like the way I look when I'm at my thinnest
x. because there is a certain sense of satisfaction in being thinner than others

Also, I agree with this...

bumper sticker like that?! relaly?! wher eyou see it?

I've seen them quite a few times, actually. In the lot outside my apartment yesterday there was a convertible and it had that in a window sticker - "no fat chicks, car will scrape" - which is incredibly demeaning. It's strange; I would never considered getting in a car with that sort of sticker on it, much less dating or befriending someone with those discriminatory values, but it still inspires me to feel bad about myself and rejected, or scared someone will think I'm fat. My mom is overweight and my dad is obese, so I definitely don't look down on people who are overweight, it just scares me to think of people hating fat girls and the idea of being fat scares me.

Well, I'm not a Christian so I don't know, but I think a Christian would tell you it's the inside that counts more than the outside. However, I'm sure there is nothing contradictory about being Christian and also wanting to look your best and get rid of unhealthy additional weight, just don't make it the primary focus of your life. It probably really depends on why you want to be thin (ie: are you trying to make guys lust after you or just trying to be healthy and feel good about yourself when you look in the mirror?)

how come/

Most people wouldn't compliment someone who is already severely underweight on losing more weight, and often people with eating disorders, especially anorexia nervosa but sometimes bulimia too, get dangerously underweight. Also, if friends and family know about a person's ED, they probably won't compliment them on losing weight because they'll worry the person is going to get sick again.

I really wish the eating disorders forum was open to all, because I'd like to chat in there sometime.

i don't undersatnd this

I know, it doesn't make a lot of sense, I guess I just worry too much what people think about me, even if I don't know them or value their opinion much. I've always felt vulnerable to insults, even outlandish ones that I know don't apply to me.

The eating disorders forum is in the Christians Only forum, so non-Christians can't participate. Sometimes I read what everyone else has written but I can't ask questions or reply. I guess the mods think it'll end up being confrontational or something if opened to all. I wish they would allow one here, or in the sociology area.

that is a good idea! why don't you suggest that in the 'suggestions' forum! =) goodluck!!

yeh i wonder why it's only non-christians? maybe they want to make some sections chirstian because it is a chirstian forum.

by the way your list of reaons they seem that you are conscience of what others think of you?? ....just say that you were alone on an island. would you CHOOSE to be fat or thin. which do you prefer YOURSELF. don't think of others. ????

I prefer looking thin, but I suppose if I was alone on an island, my primary concern would be staying alive so I wouldn't be thinking about dieting or anything.

Yes, I guess worrying about what others think is sort of reverse inspiration, it shows me what I don't want to be. Again, my thoughts on body image and such are really messed up, so don't think my views are the norm.

i believe it is the oppisite, if someone ever said to me oh it looks like you are looking healtier i play 20 questions what do u mean, do i look like i put weight on, my face looks fat they must think i need to lose more weight......now when people tell me that i look like i am losing weight i get defensive, no i am not, must be the clothes, i think for people that are underweight, never say oh you put weight on? it does damage.......lots of it.

Oh absolutely!

I used to go home in the school holidays and mum would say "Wow, you look healthy!" .... ie. FAT!

I'd starve myself as soon as I heard that and I think mum picked up on the whole thing and stopped saying I looked healthy. She started saying "Hey, you've lost weight!" or "hey, you look thin, sweetie!" which backfired on her, because it would spur me to lose more weight.

I think I could warp anything anyone said to make it sound like I needed to lose more weight. That's the whole mentality thing.

Oh and I would love to talk to non-Christians about their ED - they might be able to help more than a Christian. I wonder why they aren't allowed?

Well, im very thin... 120... and I sort of want to still lose weight. I like to be thin, because i like having no buldge sticking out of my pants, and i like being able to not take up much space and being small, although im ALWAYS cold... hmmm Also I feel like such a cow when i gain any weight.

For me.... it is all about pressure from society. I mean, I know it's good to be healthy and all and I eat a ton of nuts and fruits and vegetables and stuff like crazy... but I more do it so I can fit into my clothes and look more attractive... is that vain?
