Liturgical prayer cannot replace "heart-to-heart" because one should always pray "ex cardia" (from the heart) whether in liturgy or not. It is always good to do both- pray in the liturgy and pray without it in one's quiet times with HaShem.

In fact, Breslov Chasidim teach according to Rebbe Nachman, that one should spend at least one hour a day in individual prayer in addition to the 3 daily prayers.

I was speaking with my Rabbi about this, and he ran me off a copy of some stuff on this, and told me where the Breslov center is. I told him that even when I can't think of anything to say, I'll still sit and listen, because, well, that's my time with HaShem, and he was like, yes, yes, that's what's done.

They go together. Both forms of prayer. I'm very GREEDY! I want BOTH! :D :D :D

I was thinking today that I'd add something a little new to this thread, something quite distinctly "Messianic Judaism" -- the Liturgy of James the Just. Yes, THAT James. Ya'akov, who was head of the Jewish community of believers in Yerushalyim as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles.

We have the liturgy he wrote, even though the it has survived only in Syriac I believe (please correct me if I get any of this wrong), and has a layer of pro-trinitarian stuff added to it later in history, making it longer. The pre-tampered version is thought to have been written by James around 60 AD. Even the with the additions, it is the oldest suriviving liturgy of the Church, forming the basis for all other liturgies.

I think many of you will actually recognize parts of it. There is one line that was used as the opening for a famous hymn: "Let all mortal flesh keep silent..."

Another part is still used in many churches. I know Contra uses this in his liturgy:

Holy God, holy mighty, holy immortal, have mercy upon us.
