  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yeah I've heard it's a pretty violent and bleak series, lol.

I binge watched it last month. I didn’t like the ending but it wasn’t based on the books. Reading wise, he isn’t done and released prequels. Ideally, you’d start with them and move forward. That’s what I did with Tolkien.

I started with The Silmarillion and The Children of Hurin. Then I read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It was easier to understand the backstory.

There’s 5 books in the GoT series (thus far) plus two prequels. And he isn’t done. Hence the move to winter. I’ll have more time to dig in.

If you liked The Children of Hurin (Definitely a very tragic story) You may like The Fall of Gondolin (A few parts remind me of the Old Testament story of Jonah a bit). You may also like the story that inspired Tolkien to write Children of Hurin. It is in the epic poem The Kalevala (Finnish mythology) in the sections titled Kullervo, The Son of Evil

Thank you for the recommendations! The Kalevala is on my TBR list. Most likely due to him. I read a few titles that inspired his work and intend to finish the canon.

Yes for The Fall of Gondolin and The Children of Hurin! So glad to see other Tolkien fans. His writings truly are a blessing to this world.

The Alexiad by Anna Komnene. It was written in about 1148. It is a biographical/historical text written by Anna Komnene, daughter of Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos.

It gives good information of the Byzantine Empire of the time as well as some details of the First Crusade and its members
