A modest correction... Dylan first took The Hawks (their original name) as his touring band in 1965. They most famously backed him on his 1966 world tour that featured confrontations with the audience during electric set. (Odd, I always thought given that the hard driving "Highway 61 Revisited" album came out the year before.) After that tour and a motorcycle crash, Dylan spent early 1967 with The Band at their home in Woodstock, NY (yes, that Woodstock) where the various Basement Tapes songs were written and some were recorded. They parted ways, but got back together to record Dylan's "Planet Waves" album (Forever Young, Hazel, ...) and a subsequent tour.I was watching a doco on Bob Dylan following the history of Folk music. They mentioned the Basement tapes. I had heard of these recordings before when Dylan first became electric and his fans were upset that he was selling out to rock. So he took a step back and didn't do any touring and had a break.
It was during this time around 1975 that he got together with what would later become 'The Band' a music group in their own right after Dylan went solo and started touring again.
But most people did not know of this period with the Band as they never wanted to release the songs. It was more or less a jam session recorded on acetone tapes.
I had heard some of the songs like 'I shall be free' and 'The Mighty Quin' which Manfred Man made a hit out of. But in having a good listen I did not realise their value to early music especially Americana music.
I reckon if Dylan stayed with the Band they would have been near as good as the Beatles. Actually more like the Stones. Dylan sounds very different. It was said that Dylan was upset at his fans booing him for going electric so he decided to just play what he wanted without the scrutiny. As a result we see a potential different Dylan as a part of a great band in itsel. Almost a supergroup.
There were other lyrics Dylan wrote but did not record. A group of musicians came together to write music for the lyrics and recorded the songs. This is my favorite of the group:
