Riding atop the floodway on a Friday night
That landscape's a fine and natural sight
Just cruising slow through the dark of night
With Precious and Grace
Everything's alright

If I was a learned man.
I was warned against writing this book.
People said:
If one did not watch out,
It could be burned.
So I did as I used to do as a child.
When I was sad, I always had to pray.
I bowed to my Lover and said:
“Alas, Lord,
Now I am saddened all because of your honor.
If I am going to receive no comfort from you now,
then you led me astray
because you are the one who told me to write it"

I am getting into the blues roots music at the moment. Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, Son house, Muddy Waters, Bessie Smith and others. I like discovering how music developed.

Here is Muddy singing with Little Walter on harp.

Muddy Waters was one of the pioneers of the electric blues. Here is a snippet from the movie Cadillac Records. I could imagine the first people on the streets to hear his electrified music would have never seen nothing like it.

I was watching a doco on Bob Dylan following the history of Folk music. They mentioned the Basement tapes. I had heard of these recordings before when Dylan first became electric and his fans were upset that he was selling out to rock. So he took a step back and didn't do any touring and had a break.

It was during this time around 1975 that he got together with what would later become 'The Band' a music group in their own right after Dylan went solo and started touring again.

But most people did not know of this period with the Band as they never wanted to release the songs. It was more or less a jam session recorded on acetone tapes.

I had heard some of the songs like 'I shall be free' and 'The Mighty Quin' which Manfred Man made a hit out of. But in having a good listen I did not realise their value to early music especially Americana music.

I reckon if Dylan stayed with the Band they would have been near as good as the Beatles. Actually more like the Stones. Dylan sounds very different. It was said that Dylan was upset at his fans booing him for going electric so he decided to just play what he wanted without the scrutiny. As a result we see a potential different Dylan as a part of a great band in itsel. Almost a supergroup.

The recordings are a bit basic and there were interference they had to delete out. But you can the feel and idea for the music.

I thought I would include a video from the Band after Dylan went solo. They were great in their own right but you can see how their music was a natural fit with where Dylan was at during this time. You can also see the bands influence on Dylans music.

Another related song came up after the Basement tapes when Dylan was part of the Travelling Wilburys. So technically Dylan was in two supergroups. The Wilburys consisted of Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynn, George Harrison and Dylan each stars in their own right. Lynn often collaborated with the Beatles and reignited Orbisons comeback before he passed.

I watched a doco on how the Wilburys were formed and like the Band collaboration it was never officially regarded as a band. They just wanted to jam and make sounds. I think everyone knows 'Handle with care and End of the Line'. But here is Dylan with one of his songs as the Wilburys. But the Wiburys were a new and different beast to Dylan and the Band. But it shows Dylans versatility.

I'm on a roll now. Dylan also sang about God and said he made a deal with the big chief upstairs not downstairs like some claim. He actually made a couple of Gospel Albums in 'Gotta serve somebody and Slow train coming'. But I like his ealier stuff too.
