Yesterday I watched "Grandpa was an Emperor", a very interesting recent documentary following the great-granddaughter of Haile Selassie, the last emperor of Ethiopia before a communist takeover ended that country's ancient monarchy in the early 1970s. The granddaughter herself was not terribly interesting (she mostly repeats "I wasn't aware of all that had gone on when my grandpa was deposed" in various ways, which makes sense, since she was 11 years old at the time and had been sent away to boarding school in England once it became obvious that the communists were going to take out as much of her family as they could get ahold of), but the brief historical sketch others provide of life in the early days of the Derg regime headed by Mengistu Hailemariam was pretty interesting, if horrific. Anyone who thinks that communism is a good thing or would be good if it were tried again or whatever should familiarize themselves with how things went down in Ethiopia. The monarchy's time may have come, but that doesn't mean that what replaced it was really better just because it was technically less autocratic (sort of).

20 years later still awesome
Was never able to stay awake during them :), especially the battle scenes (which of course was most of the movies). Did the books nonstop though once upon a time.

How I'm watching this, and all movies now, is I'm watching them in parts ... not sure if I can watch the whole movie in one sitting as well :p

30-45 min each sitting, usually during dinner and a bit afterward

I haven't been able to go through the whole book, though, that's pretty cool

Been watching the Computer Chronicles.

Pretty fascination... especially their coverage of the internet during the 1990s. I didn't really know they had streaming back then.. even conference chats. I remember as a kid using the internet during the late 90s, I tried watching the Rugrats movie... but failed... lol. I'm sure there was a way.. but I didn't know how. I do wish I was a little older to experience more of the early internet.

Regardless... this show is a nice time capsule.

Cheers, on season 7 (almost 8).

I'm beginning to see the overarching theme of this show.. it's a story about a Chad (Sam Malone) who slowly slips into an incel. This show drives home very deep and disturbing truths about the fleetingness of greatness. That all men.. no matter how great or small.. will all be Betas with time.

I only vaguely remember those parts of the show but it seems weird in retrospect. Maybe later writers didn't like Sam as a character or were trying to make a statement.

I think a loser is just more funny than a successful guy. After Diane, I think Sam just couldn't put it together like he used too, lol. He's tramaitized.

Top notch crime drama
Ok. Will put it on my list. I have so much shows to be watched it's ridiculous. There are so many hours in a day.

Cheers.. season 10.

Looks like Sam Malone has been pulling himself out of inceldom lately.

Sometimes the old Chads just have to learn to readjust. The old lion has been beaten up due to years of being alpha.. he's weak.. but he's learned to be more vulnerable... he's found new life with his interactions with women.

That's what Cheers was about all along.

I've heard Friends was a knockoff of Cheers. Do you think that's true? I've seen every episode of Friends, and only a few of Cheers.

I have no idea. I think Friends was created by some of the people who did Cheers though.

There might be some similarities because of that.
