I just finished reading "Suite Francaise" by Irene Nemirovsky. It is an astounding book, one of the most fulfilling I've read in ages, and the backstory is equally compelling.
It was conceived to be four interconnected stories set in France during the Nazi Occupation. There are only two, however, since Irene Nemirovsky,a Jewish woman originally from the Ukraine, was taken to Auschwitz, where she died in 1942. Her daughter kept the manuscript all these years. It is most elegant prose, and quite compelling in that she had no idea how she would end the story, not knowing how the war would end.
