God does not need to save us from Himself. He saves us from our enemy.God's wrath, stored up against me as the result of my sin against Him.
God does not need to save us from Himself. He saves us from our enemy.
The very first thing I am redeemed from is sin and its effects.I'm finding that our interpretation of what we are saved from really informs how we read the scriptures and which 'theology' we subscribe to.
So what are you guys saved from?
Yes and I like how Romans 6 and Galatians 5 handle the matter.Good honest answers here, guys.
Now, if I may, here's some follow-up questions:
How do you think 'what we are saved from' shows up in a practical way in our lives? (What we do, what we say, what we type, etc.)
For example, do you think that someone who believes that he is primarily saved from hell (whichever version) would act differently from someone who believes he was saved from himself?
Or has the definition of 'what we are saved from' changed for you during the course of your own walk? How has that affected your relationship with God?
God does not need to save us from Himself. He saves us from our enemy.
God does not need to save us from Himself. He saves us from our enemy.
And Scripture says:While I understand that Catholics may believe differently, I have to defer to scripture, which says that we are saved from the wrath of God.
And Scripture says:
20 But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; 21 she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins."
and this:
2 Timothy 4:18
The Lord will rescue me from every evil and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Is God Himself one of the "evils" we need to be rescued from? Most surely not. Isn't it just a tad illogical to think that God needs to save us from Himself?
The problem with those verses which refer to being saved from God's wrath (and yes, there are those verses) is not the Scripture. It's that people interpret them in such a way that they actually view God's wrath as being the equivalent of a human emotion, only much larger and grander.
That is not God's wrath at all. God's wrath can only be understood in relation to his holiness, and knowing that the only way we can see his face and live is to be freed from sin and made perfectly holy.
Hence, when God gave Adam the command to not eat the fruit of the tree, he did not tell him that if he did, he would experience God's wrath and God would kill him. Rather, he quite simply tells him that if he is disobedient, he will die. Not because God 'makes' him die, but because he has chosen to cut himself off from life itself -- God.
And please note that Scripture also says this about God's wrath:
Isaiah 54:8 "In overflowing wrath for a moment I hid my face from you, but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you, says the LORD, your Redeemer."
God's wrath overflowing would be to simply leave us alone in the mess we've made. So yes, in that context we're being saved from God's wrath. For instead he chose to launch his plan of redemption to save us from our sins.
And while I understand my view may not be part of your tradition, it is not foreign to Scripture at all.
Will Catholics be able to stand against God's wrath when they stand before God's Great White Throne?
You have been given some wisdom. In addition to being save from my sins, I believe God saves us from the guilt of our sins. Others may elaborate more (or correct me) on this phrase, but the meaning I take is that my sins are not a burden. I can live life focused on becoming like Christ and not dragged down in the pessimism of how far I have to go.
And not just with guilt, but any emotion. My emotions are around me but not my master. I can experience them, use them to empathise (so that I may rejoice and mourn with others when needed), and I can give them up to the Lord and be free of them. I believe this process of giving emotions to the Lord is a part of sanctification and leads to a better and happier way of life. This leads me to want to share it with everyone else!

I am one of God's prophets. Ignore this post and my words. That will only reflect upon you at the time of judgment. My words are true.
Who's ignoring you?
If you want to be responded to, you have to say something that demands a response. Of course, that doesn't always work either...some of my most brilliant monologues have been deleted by mods.![]()
I assume you are referring to the judgment in Revelation 20. Who do you believe will be judged at that time?Like I said, while I understand that Catholics have their own unique take on things, including a very creative approach to hermeneutics, judging by your posts, we follow scripture, not your opinion. So my original answer stands: we are saved from the wrath of God, stored up against sinners as the result of our sin.

My words are true because they are weighed out by God. Rarely does anyone pay heed to my Word. God called me to be your servant and that of others, But the servnt in His Kigdom has wisdom that the leaders have not. I cannot count upon my fingers how often His word is ignored in this ephermeral world.
