"Mom was all about hellfire and brimstone. Her Old Testament God was a colossal, ancient brute, a maelstrom of blood and fire, of appetite and wrath."

""So I've been thinking. Do you believe there's a hell?""Sure. Doesn't everybody?""Well, what if this is hell, but we just don't know it?""That's crazy. Hell is like lakes of fire, and there are devils with horns and pitchforks. here's none of those around here.""But what if hell's not really like that?" Grace asked. "Everyone says it's that way," I said. "I don't think Jesus every talked about fire and brimstone.""Then why do they teach us that at church?""To scare us.""Why would they want to scare us?""I don't know. I just don't think God wants us to do good things because we're scared. I think he wants us to do good things because we're good."

So, I take it by your words, that you are not a Christian. May this wonderful God that you view as evil, convict your heart and bring you into His glorious kingdom. Yes God in the person of Jesus Christ paid for our sin debt with His earthly life. He took our sins upon Himself, being forsaken of the Father and paid our sin debt. Thank God He was willing to give His life for those as unworthy as me and you. Praise His holy name.
I'm a disciple of Jesus, of his original gospel that he preached, taught and lived. It's the gospel that the Jews would be preaching today from Jerusalem had they accepted it. Rejecting that gospel and killing Jesus as a human sacrifice wasn't the gospel OF Jesus, that's the new gospel about Jesus that developed after Jesus returned to his rightful place on high.

You would think if the Christian church truly did believe in Hell you'd hear more preaching and discussion on it. For those who don't make heaven their home and thought they were (Jesus said there'd be many like that) I think it wondered throughout eternity by such ones WHY JUST WHY wasn't there more warnings about the place. I'm sure there thought will be that yes they knew in the back part of their mind the place existed but it was more of a mental assent. They never allowed a consciousness of it to really have any place in their lives. Plus...churches feel they need to be service friendly to new people.

The last thing they feel they want labelled with is a beat you over the head you're going to hell type of place. I mean how many preachers would preach on Hell if the mayor of their city was there for a visit? Nope we've got to look dignified. Having said that you can have an off balance ministry of church were that's all they want to preach about every single week. For evangelism is where it should be I think for the most part and people have got to get outside of the 4 church walls and talk to the lost. If every Sunday service is about the fires of Hell those in such a flock aren't getting a balanced diet to grow into their glorious place of being In Christ Jesus. Balance is the key.

To teach the good news is to teach the full counsel of the Lord.
Jesus taught more of hell than of heaven. This emphasizes a warning of this wrath.
God is just, therefore He will punish those who do evil in this world.
With that, we are also to teach the grace of God and live by faith, not by sight.

Hello. In the bible when God gives a word it very often contains warnings of judgement and calls to repentance. However there is a point in the passage, a turning point where God pours out promises of mercy, grace and restitution.

I have heard 'fire and brimstone' preaching and while this is not true of all, I have heard many where the second part is lacking. No grace, no mercy, no love, no hope for the hearer. No purpose to it other than to give the preacher a chance to rant and rail.

John 1:14 describes Jesus as being full of grace and truth. Both grace and truth are needed.

God Bless :)

I first attended church, Sunday School, when Roosevelt was president but did not become a Christian until Johnson was president. I can only remember one sermon which included references to hell. I preached it in '95-'96. I did not rant and rail and I included grace, mercy, love and hope.

Excellent. Both mercy and judgement need to be preached.

God Bless You :)
