What are Jesus' Commandments? How about the 10 Commandments?

Jesus gave specific commandments to his disciples. I can see in 1 John 3:23

This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us. The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

Inherent in believing in the name of God's Son Jesus Christ is the fact that we, then, have no desire to break these:

1. You shall have no other gods before Me.
2. You shall not make for yourselves an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on earth. You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God..........
3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.

So far, we've covered commandments that if broken would be sins against God Himself. Since we believe in Jesus Christ, putting emphasis on the word "believe in", our new divine nature doesn't want to sin against God.

Next,

4. Observe the sabbath day to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you.

On this one, Paul explains that the sabbath fell on a Saturday for the Jews, and they were to observe each Saturday, and not work in it. Paul now explains that since the Jesus is Lord of the sabbath, he challenges us to think about "Is it lawful to do good or evil on the sabbath?" Obviousy, good is the answer, so sometimes it takes work to do good. This is the only one of the ten commandments that got changed. Paul says, let every man be convinced in his own heart about choosing a day to sanctify as holy unto the Lord.

The next ones are relational commands, which are covered in "Love one another." If we do that, we will automatically not break these commandments:

5. Honor your father and your mother...
6. You shall not murder.
7. You shall not commit adultery.
8. You shall not steal.
9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
10. You shall not covet...

See how Jesus fulfilled the Law? He didn't break one commandment because He knew the Father and also He loved the Father, and the whole world.

Yet Jesus brought out that if you hate your brother and call him a fool, you've murdered him in your heart.

Or if you look on a woman with lust you've committed adultery already in your heart.

There are many ways to break the ten commandments if you search the heart of God and search your own motives.

I defy anyone to say in all honesty before God and man that they have not, and do not on a regular basis break the 10 commandments, the Greatest commandment, or the "one that is like it (the Greatest commandment)"

I hope you don't think I feel that way!! Heck, I break 'em all the time. I'm simply giving the relationship between Jesus' commands and the 10 commandments, how they fit together. Jesus was the only one who didn't break them. Did you think I meant I don't break them? I'm sorry,..... I sure do:sorry:. But I don't really intend to sin against man or God. I'm weak and I do.

No, I was just getting that out there before the "I've reached a state of pure sinless perfection" crowd started posting and claiming we have to be sinless in order to continue on in salvation.

When you said

The first thing I thought of was those people.

Jesus came to give a NEW COMMANDMENT, to love God and love others. And if you love God and love others, you fulfill the 10 Commandments because the whole 10 Commandment law hangs on LOVE.

John 13:34-35 (NASB) "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."

"Which is the greatest commandment in the law?" He answered: "'You must love Jehovah your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole mind.' This is the greatest and first commandment. The second, like it, is this:'You must love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments the whole Law hangs, and the Prophets." - Matthew 22:36-40

"Of all the commandments, which is the most important?" Jesus said, "The most important one, is this:'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this:'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these."

This is not a Sabbath thread so I am just going to say that if you are quoting the commandments, the 4th does say the Sabbath is the 7th day of the Lord. It doesn't say for the Jews.

There are many who say that the commandment Jesus gave recorded in John replaces the 10 commandments. But as you have shown, it does not. Furthermore, John also says this:

1Jn 5:1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.
1Jn 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
1Jn 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

In other words, John says that if you love Jesus you would love the one who sent him and if you love the one who sent him, you would keep his commandments.

1. What Commandments? The 10 Commandments?

2. Do you perfectly keep the 10 Commandments and never sin? Yes or No?

3. If No, then do you believe that those verses you quoted, 1Jn 5:1-3, do not apply to you? Yes or No?

I guess you don't love God enough to try to keep his commandments. God doesn't expect us to be perfect but he doesn't want us to just live in disobedience either. If we love him we will keep his commandments. Right?

The easy way to find out is to have love. One you love God and love your fellow men you will fulfill the law.

So John 15:12?

That's reasonable. Due to our natures it's impossible, but reasonable. Unless you're the one living person out there, aside from Christ, who can say they've never even had a bad thought towards another person at any point in your life?

Whats up with you guys and this perfection issue. No one is talking about being perfect here. Because I have had a bad thought towards someone it means I shouldn't love my neighbour?

If you've had a bad thought, even one you've transgressed the law and broken the commandments. When you or someone else comes and says something like

guess you don't love God enough to try to keep his commandments.

It sure sounds like talk of perfection.

Nope. Trying to do something doesn't imply perfection it just implies that you are going to put some effort into something. I don't need to judge people about what they did in the past. We all have sinned and come short. But God still expects his people to live a certain way. He doesn't want us to sin, but if we sin he has made provision for us.

Prophecykid, just as in a few posts after this quote above you ask why the term perfection is mentioned as a return statement to when you say to "keep his commandments."

Just as we, those who live under Jesus Grace, mention that Jesus fulfilled the law. Those of you who push "keep His commandments" always come back with the notion that we desire to live in disobedience.

  1. Romans 6:15
Well then, since God’s grace has set us free from the law, does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not!
  2. Galatians 5:4
For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God’s grace.
Two very strong verses that we stand behind. We know that we ourselves will not and can not be perfect through the law, God demands perfection.

Romans 10:5
For Moses writes that the law’s way of making a person right with God requires obedience to all of its commands.

James 2:10
For the person who keeps all of the laws except one is as guilty as a person who has broken all of God’s laws.

Jesus is the only one to ever be perfect, I humble myself to accept His Grace and not my lack of perfection to be seen Righteous in Gods eyes.

We know that one improper thought causes us be imperfect, unRighteous in Gods eyes.

We also know that if we compare our righteousness according to the law, we now fall from Grace. It goes deeper yet, we get into the Holy Sprit that now leads us, which is an outward expression of what God has done on the inside.

This is why we ask the perfection question, simply put, you can't do it your own, only through Christ are we saved, why go back to the law?

When it reads "Fallen from Grace" referes to the idea that the last covenant is the highest, Grace. To fall from Grace is to go back to what was, I recommend sticking to "what is" not with "what was".

What commandment are we to keep?

John 13:34-35 (NASB) "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."

Jesus went onto to say:.... When asked the question, "Which is the greatest commandment in the law?" He answered: "'You must love Jehovah your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole mind.' This is the greatest and first commandment. The second, like it, is this:'You must love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments the whole Law hangs, and the Prophets." (Matt. 22:35-40, NW)

When Jesus was asked, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?" Jesus said, "The most important one, is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these." (NIV, Mark 12:28-31).

So in the New Covenant we are perfect Commandment keepers when we are born again because we will now naturally love God and love others.

The NEW COMMANDMENTS in the NEW COVENANT are LOVE GOD AND LOVE OTHERS, and this truly born again Christians do perfectly because God writes his love and law on our hearts and we are now perfect New Covenant Commandment keepers.

Unfortunately, many people are still in the Old Covenant and try to keep the 10 Commandments perfectly before they believe they will be saved, for example Seventh-day Adventist cult members believe that!

So I myself am a perfect commandment keeper in the New Covenant and verses such as Rev 14:12, 12:17 will apply to me!

More babble and double talking from you. One minute you claim and indicate you love Jesus and are obedient. But the next minute you admit you are not perfect and cannot be perfectly obedient, and you admit you are a sinner, which means, YOU ARE DISOBEDIENT!

1 John 3:4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.

What is your point. This is about what how God wants us to live. God doesn't want us to sin but if we do we have an advocate. Because we have an advocate it doesn't mean we just sin willfully. At least we should make an attempt to be obedient.

Jesus, in Matthew 7:12, says

In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

It's often called the 'golden rule', even in bibles where they title sections. It's not called a rule, or a golden rule, by Jesus. In another gospel He calls it a command: to love one another.

But it's interesting how he explains it in Matthew. For by treating people the way you would want to be treated (we can all learn from Jesus on this one!! :) ) we ARE fullfilling the Law.

Now we don't treat people the right way all the time. Somewhere, a Law has been broken by not treating people right. Covetness, stealing, adultery, lying,...

However, we aren't under the influence of the Law and it's judgments anymore. Where there's no Law, there's no sin.

How does this all work out?

We have broken God's new law, the law of faith. Read Romans 3:27-28
Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.

Therefore, if we concentrate on treating others as ourselves, we may fulfill the Law, but it's not probable we can continue without breaking the commandment of love. However, we are justified by the blood of Christ by faith in Him. So, get this: as long as we have faith, we are justified (from our sins), holy, clean, saints, forgiven, sanctified, sinless in the eyes of God.

Shouldn't we see ourselves as God sees us? No, we aren't perfect. We sin. But God sees us differently. Don't let your adversary, who roars like a lion, devour you in self pity, depression, discouragment, or a wrong doctrine about who you are. You are a saint in God's eyes, so we should look at ourselves as holy, even though we have a sin problem. Why? Because Jesus' death and resurrection has rescued us from the Law which brings wrath and death to us. Jesus has justified us by faith.
