If God's law were His instructions for how to become self-righteous and God does not want us to become self-righteous, then it would follow that God therefore does not want to be obeyed, which is absurd, especially considering that all throughout the Bible, God wanted His people to repent and to return to obedience to His law, and even Jesus began his ministry with that message. Therefore God's law is not God's instructions for how to become self-righteous, but His instructions for how to express His righteousness through our actions. People have sadly treated righteousness and holiness as being bad things accusing those who are righteous and holy as being self-righteous and holier than thou.
We can never obtain righteousness on our own. When God convicts us of our sin through the 3rd person of the Trinity, repent and accept Christ into our hearts we need to keep on climbing Jacob's ladder/the Mountain. We slip many times when tried and tested. We must correct what's wrong, keep the Lord's commandments and move on upwards through faith.
James 1:2-3 We'll go through Divers Temptations on this earth to mould and refine us. Even although James instructs us to count it as joy, sometimes we can't see it like that, but we must have faith, many trials, to grow stronger in our faith. Looking forward to the promised land/Heaven/longing to see Christ face to face, esp when going through the problems helps us mature as Christians. Its God's method of making us righteously Holy and mature.
Mature Christians will be able to help others get through the difficulties as God has already helped them through many problems on their journey.
