What are demons?

In fiction, a supernatural being can invade your being and take control of you. You are now "demon possessed." But lets back up. What if you came under the influence of something that was harmful to you, your monkey on your back so to speak, could you not be dealing with your "demon?" And so, in a similar fashion to Satan, the bible speaks of Demons who are supernatural beings, and demons which are simply personifications of harmful conditions from addictions or disease.

So the Bible speaks of three kinds, actual demons (fallen angels who serve Satan) fictional Demons (false inventions of men, i.e. false gods) and various "demons" referring to afflictions.

Folks opposed to Jesus said Jesus had a demon, rather than used the power of the Holy Spirit. Hence, a fictional demon (John 7:20). And in Matthew 4:24, we see various afflictions which have a natural origin and demoniacs which refers to afflictions due to the influence of an actual demon. So a mentally ill person might or might not be actually possessed. The bottom line is in the first century and before folks referred to addictions and diseases as demon possession, but only during the lifetime of Jesus (i.e recorded in the gospels) do we see an outburst of actual demonic activity in opposition to Jesus. So while demons actually exist, and oppose God, they seem not to be as active now in actual possession, subsequent to the lifetime of Jesus. You will find scant references in Acts and the remainder of the New Testamont.

Demons used to be angels (served God). But they rebelled. Satan/Devil was a leader (used to be an angel too) and they rebelled against God together. They became really evil. They enjoy evil. They cannot be good. They seek to destroy humanity. They talk to us through our thoughts and influence us negatively.

They also cause certain inflamable situations where people fight with each other. They can inhabit people (hence: demon possessed). They orchestrate things to happen in the world behind the scenes. Their purpose is to make sure people don't believe in God, or make up their own God (hence: all kinds of religions) or rebel against God. They spread propaganda about non-existance of God and other stuff (through influencing certain people to write or say or do certain things).

1PE 5:8-9 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith,

2CO 2:10 If you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And what I have forgiven - if there was anything to forgive - I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake,
11 in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.

God's Spirit also works in people (like they do) only He works in people for their good and for their salvation.

PHI 2:13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.

2TI 4:18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom

1JO 4:4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
God lives in Christian's hearts and influences them. Demons influence people of the world.

1JO 2:14 I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.

1JO 5:19 We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.

3JO 1:11 Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.

Here is one vision a person received from God:

In the Bible, there are many accounts of Jesus expelling demons or spirits. Does anyone have more information on these spirits? Do they still exist?

Didn't someone just ask this? The Book of Enoch describes them as fallen angels from the time of Noah who were forced to wander the earth, to test man.

I find that persuasive.

I do think there are different kinds of dark angels.

These are as ghosts, powerful ghosts.

Culturally, all angels of destruction are typically called demons. This is not unfair, though the sort that would wander the earth without bodies would be different from the sort wandering the earth with them.

Very good question, I too would like to know the answer. Personally, I interpret it as 'mental illness', but each to their own.
