• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What about Yu-Gi-Oh?

Hey,

I have a question.

I don't know anything about either of these, Yu-Gi-Oh or Harry Potter.

But what is your personal opinion, and or what is the Church's stance (that you know of) on either of these kinds of things(if any) ?

Thanks,
Highway of Life

EDIT: Added:
Satan's Greatest Success.
"To succeed in making people believe that he doesn't exist. And in this he has almost succeeded -- even within the Church. We have a clergy and an episcopate that no longer believe in the devil, in exorcisms, in the extraordinary evil that the devil can cause, nor in the Power that Jesus has given us to drive out demons." "His (Satan's) strategy is always along the same lines... He makes people believe that hell does not exist, that sin does not exist, and that he is nothing but one more experience to try out. 'Concupiscence' (i.e., lust or strong desire), 'success' and 'power' are the three great passions on which Satan relies." -- FR. GABRIELE AMORTH, Rome's exorcist

Pope John Paul II has told us,
We are living at a time when Satan's power is "unleashed"... and yet, many Catholics no longer believe he exists! What was once attributed to the devil (Satan) is now understood as "mental illness"... Science and Psychology are "gods of this modern age". BUT, THE DEVIL (SATAN) AND EVIL SPIRITS (DEMONS) ARE NOT "FOLLY FROM THE PAST"! "HE WHO DOES NOT BELIEVE IN THE DEVIL DOES NOT BELIEVE IN THE GOSPEL." -- Pope John Paul II
1 Peter 5:8 said:
Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour.

Study to Answer : Article
Satan uses the occult to ensnare the minds of people, and he works to introduce people to the occult by using supposedly "innocent" games like Yu Gi Oh. This article is not intended to be a personal attack upon anyone reading it, but instead to simply show the dangers of the occult and how Yu Gi Oh relates to it. I hope that you will find this article helpful and informative, and I pray that this will be a blessing to you.
The answer to the question above, my friend, is the devil (satan), who uses his demonic power to blind the minds of children and adults nationwide to the dangers of Yu-Gi-Oh. Yu-Gi-Oh is an occult oriented game and anything of the occult is dangerous. You say, “that is ridiculous! Yu-Gi-Oh is just kids stuff, a card game, a cartoon!” That is exactly what Satan wants you to believe.

Satan wants to do everything contrary to God and his word (The Bible). He has counterfeits to everything God has and will often add a lot of truth with his lies to deceive people. Satan himself is the father of lies.
For the entire article, Read Here

This is what kids are getting involved in. This is the purpose and design of the Game, to be a hidden vessel for demonic power to blind the mind.
And thus it looks as though it is a simple game, a childs toy.
As the game says: "There's more to the card game than meets the eye"
What does the game say about itself?

In addition, players can use Spell, set traps, change the battlefield itself, and even fuse two monsters together to form a monster of immense power!

But there's more to this card game than meets the eye!

Legend has it five thousand years ago, ancient Egyptian Pharaoahs used to play a magical game very similar to Duel Monsters. This ancient game involved magical ceremonies, which were used to foresee the future and ultimately, decide one's destiny. They called it the Shadow Game, and the main difference back then was that the monsters were all real! With so many magical spells and ferocious creatures on the earth, it wasn't long before the game got out of hand and threatened to destroy the entire world! Fortunately, a brave Pharaoh stepped in and averted this cataclysm with the help of seven powerful magical totems.

Now, in present times, the game has been revived in the form of playing cards.

Fortune Telling, Magical Ceremonies, Magical Spells are all part of the magic arts.
What does God say about those who practice magic arts, witchcraft or cast spells.
Revelation 21:8 said:
those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars–their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur...”
1 corinthians 10:31 said:
So whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
"
Can you use Yu-Gi-Oh for the glory of God? Will it honor him? The occult certainly won’t honor and glorify God"
Romans 12:9 said:
Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.

1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 said:
But test and prove all things [until you can recognize] what is good; [to that] hold fast.
1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 said:
Abstain from evil [shrink from it and keep aloof from it] in whatever form or whatever kind it may be.
Yu-Gi-Oh certainly has an appearance of evil.

Test and prove all things until you recongnize what is good. And stay away from anything that has the appearance of evil.

Oh dear, Yu Gi Oh! I have no idea what it is actually is, but when I was teaching (Catholic school)....the cards, the cards, I still have nightmares! They would never put them awaaaaay!! Lol. The school actually decided to confiscate them, not because they had any particular stance on the cartoon, but they were too distracting for the kids.

And for the record, I did a unit on Harry Potter with no complaints from anyone about it being immoral. At that time I didn't even know the controversy existed, but if anyone had been concerned, I would have heard about it.

Personally, if I ever had children, I would never let them read Harry Potter because of it's association with witchcraft! This is something I have struggled with in the past. As for Yu-Gi-Oh, I know next to nothing about it so I'd have to do some research on it first.

Would you let them read The Chronicles of Narnia or The Lord of the Rings?? They both have wizards and witches....

I've heard all of the arguments about Harry Potter- and I just don't think they are the kind of books one ends up basing their code of conduct upon-- you know what I mean?? If some parents think it prudent for their children not to read them that's cool- but it's also equally okay if some parents think it fine for their children to read them.

I personally don't see the big deal- but then again the Harry Potter bokks are 5 among 100's of books I've read, most of which are from the Western Canon- so it might be different for someone who has a different reading experience from me...

Harry Potter is fun for kids and adult's to watch and to read (though personally, i've had a gutful of Potter and J.K Rowlinson)...remember the wizard of Oz ..well, The big guy at the Emerald City who could solve everyones problems wasn't God...and I can't imagine Christmas without it.

IOW, fantasy feed's the minds of young children, parents are in the ideal position of guarding their own childrens spiritual well being, should they take it all a little too seriously.

God Bless.

I guess no one remembers my thread about this  Yu-Gi-Oh plays a part in summoning spirits, but it's sugar coated as a kids anime. In most cases it doesn't seem to produce anything tangible, but a few years ago my brother were into that and while they were playing with my friend he said he felt cold fingers touching his hand, of course all of this was connected to something much more having to do with the land itself and the cards were not the central cause. My 10yo cousin also had an experience when he was playing with these cards, during the night he said he was woken up by a tall woman with long black hair. He was frozen with fear and she told him her name and said she wasn't leaving. He eventually started to pray and she left. Anything regarding summoning should be avoided, especially when companies try to push it as a harmless game...remember the Oujia board?

all i know about YGO, is that the cards that they play the game with cost a fortune...and that many schools prohibited them because they were getting stolen or conned from other children...they're no longer popular at my sons school.

I remember watching Evereyone loves Raymond for the very first time..it was about the time the YGO thing took Englands children by storm...Raymond's daughter gave the best of her 'deck' of YGO type cards away..and then her father made her get it back when he found out it's monetary value...what made it so hilarious for me is that i had just got really cross with my son for being so 'gullible' and for allowing others at school to manipulate him into giving his best cards away!..shortly after that i hid the whole deck...for months...and now that their popularity has passed, he can have 'em back ;)

God bless.

The difference between the Ouija board and these card games is that when using the Ouija board, you're trying to obtain information. With the card games, you're not trying to actually summon anything, but that's just the term used for playing a card. I don't see anything wrong with Yu-Gi-Oh and similar card games, but if I did have an experience like your friend, I'd get rid of the cards.

With something like a Ouija board, you're intentionally trying to make contact with the dead and hope to get an answer written to the board. By doing this it's basically inviting anything that wants to come through to come through, which as new age or occultists would say are "beings from the lower astral plane", ie "demons". It's not a good idea.

All I know about Yu Gi Oh is that some kid's parents spend a fortune on them. I've had more than one parent tell me how lucky I am (financially) that my kids aren't into it. They've never liked it. Actually, I think they think it's kind of dumb.

They like Harry Potter, though. I don't have too much of a problem with it. I have to admit I like the story myself. I just remind them that it's just a story...make believe.
