Mark, sounds like your class is pretty interesting. I've been studying Romans which I think is so encouraging.
Yes, its been a lot of fun, and I'm learning a lot myself. Romans is a great book to study, too.
Paul, writing to the Colossians at the time, was in prison wasn't he? Seems like so many of Pauls letters were from prison.
Yes, Paul wrote Colossians from prison around AD 60-62. This would be Acts 28:16-31. Paul also wrote Ephesians, Philemon and Philippians during this time, and together they are referred to as Paul's prison epistles. Paul was released in AD 62 but imprisoned again in AD 67-68, when he wrote his last book, 2 Timothy.
Can you imagine being this encouraging to others while being jailed. I heard once that the prisons were filthy. Often filled with human waste possibly ankle deep. I can't get my brain wrapped around that, how someone can be so filled with love that they would take time out to write to encourage them to keep the faith and pray and pray and pray.
Well, Paul's first imprisonment was a "house arrest" because he was awaiting a trial. He was in chains, but had more privileges than those in a normal prison. Paul's second imprisonment was in an actual prison though. And yes, Paul always seems to encourage others in spite of his circumstances.
I like the part about seasoning your conversations with salt. Salt that would give it much flavor instead of just being bland.
True! The Complete Jewish Bible by David Stern translates it similarly:
CJB Colossians 4:6 let your conversation always be gracious and interesting, so that you will know how to respond to any particular individual.
