• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Luke 24:21 - "But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened."

This verse would seem to indicate that the crucifixion could not have occurred any later than Thursday. However, the preponderance of people believe that the Bible says it occurred on a Friday. Which idea is closer to the real intention of the passage?

Days were divided differently then, according to tradition, with the day starting at night fall, IIRC.

Thus, Friday is the first day, the day Fe was crucified on. Saturday would be the second day, Sunday being the third.

At least, that's how I've always had it explained.

My name is Mark. I'll post the passage, and we can discuss it for a week or until the discussion winds down.

I've been teaching a class about Paul's epistles this fall, and one of the things that has really fascinated me this time is Paul's emphasis on prayer. He often wrote out prayers in his letters, and he also asked others to pray for him. Imagine, an apostle asking ordinary Christians to pray for him!

Here is an interesting passage on prayer (among other things!) from Colossians 4:2-6 -

2 Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.
3 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains.
4 Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should.
5 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.
6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

Hopefully its not too long. Feel free to make comments, clarify the text or ask questions. Don't feel restricted to just prayer, it can be on anything else that you might see from this passage.

From a Jewish perspective, they would count any part of a day as that day. So if the third day in Luke 24:21 was definitely Sunday, then that meant the second day was Saturday and the first day - the day of the crucifixion - was Friday.

yodafett,

re: "Days were divided differently then, according to tradition, with the day starting at night fall, IIRC. "

I don’t see how that impacts the understanding of Luke 24:21. I wonder if you might explain.

re: "Thus, Friday is the first day, the day He was crucified on. Saturday would be the second day, Sunday being the third. "

But that wasn’t the syntax. Luke doesn’t just say "the third" day. He says "the third day SINCE". So if Sunday was the first day SINCE these things happened, that would make Saturday the 2nd day SINCE these things happened, and Friday the 1st day SINCE these things happened, thus making Thursday the day that the last of these things happened. Assuming that the crucifixion was included in "these things", then it seems that it couldn’t have occurred any later than Thursday.

Even though it was still Friday it happened, since part of the day lapsed between the cruficision and night fall, it still counts as a full day when counting from it. But again, I wasn't that, that's how it's always been explained to me, from different sources. :)

I’m sorry, but I still don’t see how that helps explain Luke 24:21. If Friday was the first day SINCE something happened, when did the something happen?

It happened on Friday, and since there was still part of Friday left, it was counted as the first day "since", in that culture and society. In essence, they rounded any portion of a day up to a full day.

Example: You eat eggs for breakfast Monday morning. You go about the rest of the day. Night falls, you sleep, and you wake up Tuesday morning thinking "It's been 2 days since I've had eggs (the portion of Tuesday that has already passed and the portion of Monday that passed after you ate eggs).

Ok, I see - its not SINCE but saying on the third day is an inclusive reckoning. See Luke 13:32-33 -

32 He replied, "Go tell that fox, 'I will drive out demons and heal people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.' 33 In any case, I must keep going today and tomorrow and the next day-- for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!

Today, tomorrow, the next day = three days.

My name is Billy and I will take a stab at it.

On the surface I see Paul asking that we be prayerful and thankful for those that God may send onto our path that we can minister to.

Mark, sounds like your class is pretty interesting. I've been studying Romans which I think is so encouraging.

Paul, writing to the Colossians at the time, was in prison wasn't he? Seems like so many of Pauls letters were from prison.

Can you imagine being this encouraging to others while being jailed. I heard once that the prisons were filthy. Often filled with human waste possibly ankle deep. I can't get my brain wrapped around that, how someone can be so filled with love that they would take time out to write to encourage them to keep the faith and pray and pray and pray.

I like the part about seasoning your conversations with salt. Salt that would give it much flavor instead of just being bland.

What documentation do you have that says that in the first century, if a person did something in the early afternoon on Friday, that they could say later that afternoon that it (Friday) was now the first day SINCE they did it?

But it is "SINCE"; "...today is the third day SINCE these things happened."

re: "See Luke 13:32-33 -"

I don’t see where Luke 13:32-33 has any contribution to make with regard to understanding the meaning of Luke 24:21.

rstrats,
Then please start a new thread. Any further conversation on this issue - in this thread - is straying far from the intent of the OP.

Yes! Paul is asking for prayers that "open doors" and tells believers to make the most of every opportunity. Prayer, evangelism and building up the body of Christ are interrelated.
