My wife and I are taking a sunday school class called Westminster Shorter Catechism since we are fairly new to Reformed Theology doctrines. Have you taken this class before? We both love it and we are thankful that this class is being taught by a retired reformed theologian who taught at a reformed seminary school. He is a great teacher.

Right now we are #33 through #35 and each Sunday, we get into lively and interesting discussions in Class. Everyone in class are enjoying the discussions.

There is a discussion that we may go to Westminster Larger Catechism next year. I am already studying this while I am studying the Shorter Catechism during the week.

Anyway, I wished I knew about this while I was growing up. They are very biblical and encouraged me to think each questions and answers. I am hoping to memorize important keys of the Catechism for my own personal sake as I learn Reformed Theology.

Have you taken this class before? If you did, your thoughts on this?

That's great, Jim. I'm glad you have the opportunity to take a catechism class. I have never even had the privilege of visiting an even moderately Reformed church, much less taken a catechism class. I simply studied the catechisms and confessions on my own time and probably got through them that much more quickly as a result. I find myself frequently referring back to them, though. The Westminster catechism in particular is just rife with sage wisdom.

I hope you enjoy your class, and it certainly sounds like you are. I'm glad to hear there are still churches teaching the catechism, as I feel it is wonderful teaching tool and accurately and concisely relates the doctrines of Scripture.

Soli Deo Gloria

Whoops! Hit that send button before I was finished.

I'm a firm believer in the Catechisms. I think they are a great way of summarizing Biblical truth. My husband and I began with the Children's Catechism, having our children memorize the questions and answers as soon as they could speak and remember. Children have an amazing capacity to memorize and recite and I believe parents should take advantage of that with Scripture and Catechism (and a lot of other stuff!). My son, who is now 15 and in a private school, has told us that he has drawn on his memory during Bible classes (he is taking Systematic Theology this year). I'm counting on him using that memory during times of trial and suffering, discipleship, etc.

Just realized that I need to get moving to make an early appointment! Gotta go!

Studying the Westminster Catechisms and Confession of Faith is an excellent foundation for anyone interested in what the Bible teaches, keep it up.

If I may offer a suggestion, purchase the book "Westminster Confession of Faith" published by the Free Presbyterian Publications, 133 Woodlands Road, Glasgow G3 6LE, ISBN 0 902506 08 0 (casebound) ISBN 0 920506 35 8 (paperback) which is available in many places, and possibly at http://www.monergism.com/ .

It contains the Westminster Confession of Faith, the Larger and Shorter Catechisms, The Sum of Saving Knowledge, The National Covenant, The Solemn League and Covenant, The Directory for the Public Worship of God, The Form of Presbyterian Church Government, and the Directory for Family Worship. Quite a bit of very useful information for about $15.00.

It is wonderful to hear of people who are new to Reformation teaching and so keen to learn the biblical doctrines. I recall when I first left the Pelagian, Arminian scene and how exciting it was to study the Bible and actually have it make sense. I pray that you continue with your classes and that you actually go onto the Westminster Confession of Faith. As you study the Shorter Catechism you are not only studying Reformed Theology, but you are in fact studying what the Bible teaches.

Your past is not a waste since you will be able to identify with those who are still in their errors. You will be able to show them a better way if you contine to be Warm Reformed, not one of the Chosen Frozen. Having said that some in their endeavour to be warm actually end up Thawed and Flawed.

Warmest Regards,
DrWarfield

Thanks for bringing this up with the links.
I had been meaning to go thru this myself for awhile.

I just started another blogspot/blogger blog to go thru the Larger Catechism.
Maggie's Reformation is the name in case anyone is interested.

That's a good idea. I can do my own blog when I am studying shorter and larger catechism. I have not decided if I am going to include my current blog or set up a new one. My current blog consists general christian theology.

I now have four different public blogspot/blogger blogs.
I find it less confusing if someone is reading for one purpose alone.
Also easier to find things when each blog is on one topic/focus.
