  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You would have to define "useful for modern thought." Oden was a well-respected modern Methodist pastor and professor, so presumably he is useful for understanding how some Methodists think. Like any large group Methodists have a range of tendencies, from creedal, patristically minded Christians like Wesley and Oden, to more modern/ generic evangelical tendencies. But I would argue that the Wesley/Oden approach- a popular, evangelical Christianity deeply informed by church history and the fathers- best represents what sets Methodism apart from other strains of Christianity. Insofar as Methodists stray from this path they are not especially different from other modern Protestant groups.

Having said that, Oden's Classic Christianity is not specifically Methodist- in that work he is laying out a broader scope of Christian doctrine from the first millennium. For specifically Wesleyan/ Methodist theology, he has a shorter book, John Wesley's Scriptural Christianity. This is basically a collection of paraphrases and quotes from Wesley's writing (all clearly referenced) organized into a systematic theology. I'm in the middle of reading it right now and it's quite good.
