I've just downloaded the WELS Online app for my iPhone 3GS, but haven't played around with it much yet. In fact, it's downloading now. Does anyone else have this app for either their iOS device or their Android device? If so, what do you think of it? Which sections do you use most often? Could it be better in any way?

Best solution: buy a Mac!

My wife majored in psychology and she was telling me about a study they did of Mac users and they found out that when Mac users talk about Macs, the same section of their brain lights up as when they talk about religion.

She said she should send that to the pastor that married us as he was well known for telling people to buy Macs.

What does the app do? I don't have a smart phone. . . in fact my phone doesn't even have a camera on it. In fact it has no bells and whistles other then it calls/receives calls and it sends/receives text messages. Thats about it really. It doesn't even have caller ID on it.

I'm in rebel mode right now where I'm like "I don't need one of them new fangled smarty phoney thingies. . . but in the end I'll probably end up getting one eventually.

Do you have an iPod Touch at least? I think it will work on there too. Anyway here are the list of features:

It has podcasts, videos, daily devotions, information about the WELS, Q&A, a 3-year Bible reading plan, Call Report (which from what I can tell by the app is for teachers and staff ministers), and Together, which seems to be a news section.

Now the devotionals are available in audio or text format, which is really handy because you may not always have your ear buds or speaker system nearby or it may not be convenient to listen to audio at that time. The podcast is of course audio only and that's the WELSTech podcast which discusses how technology can be used to aid the work of the church. The Through My Bible in 3 Years can be listened to as audio or read. It's really a well put together app and since it's free I consider it an essential, if your phone can support it. Is this enough of a reason to go out and buy an iPod Touch, iPhone 3GS or 4, an iPad or an Android device? Possibly.

I honestly havn't been able to justify spending the money to buy one of those things.

How much do the smart phone plans usually cost? My in-laws gave my wife one for Christmas but insist for some reason on paying for her cell phone, so I have no idea what it costs.

It depends on what you want. Do you want unlimited web, e-mail, and texting? If so, those data plans will cost more money. If you want to set a limit on your texts, how many hours of web access you have, that will reduce your cost. It also depends on the carrier. So will charge more money, but offer better phones. You have to shop around.

But the most important thing is coverage. Check out the coverage maps of the carriers and judge which one will work best for you. You could have the coolest phone in the world, loaded with GPS, a portable library, internet radio, awesome games, but it's not gonna do you any good, if the phone doesn't get a signal.
