One lady I talked to after the class didnt like me, she asked if I was converting, I said "no, I'm just here to learn." Then she asked me if I was going to be a baptist minister and when I said yes, her demeanor totally changed and she began to argue with me and implied I was there to take money some how. I told her I was confused and didnt know what she was talking about. She told me we'd "discuss it another day" and walked away.

Thanks for sharing your experiences in this class. I feel like I'm also participating vicariously through you. :)

It sounds like this woman has had a previous bad experience with a baptist. Showing her respect for the Catholic faith in the midst of disagreement as well as the integrity of your character will go a long way towards breaking down her stereotype.

too cool thanks for sharing. The Easter Vigil mass is super fantastic. I am sure you will really enjoy it. I hope they have told you that it lasts 2-3 hours. ours normally lasts 2 1/2 hours. Thursday before easter's mass is also special. i look forward to reading more of your experience. I also wonder about the purple flowers. i don't know anything about them.

all for JESUS!!

Just love her, and if you do "discuss it another day" I would recommend just listening and not saying much.

My only beef with the priest was his use of "colorful language," the flippant use of "god" in his speech, and his brief refrence to liking the wine too much and disliking the wine they use for lent. Plus somehow we got into discussing nuclear weapons :p .

I used to be an altar-boy and we were privy to some of the "other" activities of the priest e.g. Poker night. Some of them are pretty down to earth guys and not all of them are tea-totallers, not any of them if you count wine. Anyway the priest I served was a great guy, I would never say one bad thing about him.

Mary Ann drove me home which was very nice and said she'd pick me up and drive me back next week. I am going to take her up on it.

Thats it.. thats my experiance. :)

That's great. Keep on going.

:p It happens. :)

I've been invited to attend peoples confirmations which I am going to try and do, and also been invited to the saturday night mass before easter. I am going to go to that and observe. Fascinating stuff I think.

I have to agree with the other posts regarding the Easter Vigil Mass. It is the most beatiful Mass of the whole liturgical year. You must go! I look forward to hearing the Litany of the Saints all year. Ooh - dont forget to visit the facilities first - the Mass lasts two or three hours.

I'd have to agree here...

my favorite times of year to go to church were always Palm Sunday (which I went to in a Melkite Church which is a lil different than the RC's Mass, but still very similar) and then Easter. Talk about visual stimulation! It's great in any Catholic Church, but I would go to the big one in the next city over. It's a National Shrine... and man what beauty.

Lord's Envoy: I really don't recommend leaving your home church to attend these events, but if you can go to both it would definatly be a very pretty culture shock! haha :p

I agree with Carina (big surprise  ). If you're able to make both, I know it will be worth your efforts, but as you certainly know, your primary responsibility is to your own church.

oh, and I forgot to mention.. when I've been to mass on Palm or Easter Sunday it usually has only lasted about an hour an a half to an hr and 45 mins max. I'd check where ever you are going first to see how things go there if your going to be strapped for time (if going at all).

The Easter Vigil Mass is the longest Mass of the year. I've been to ones as short as 2 hours, but I've also been to one that was 4 hours. So checking about a time frame is a good idea.

Doesn't it have like 10 or 12 Old Testament readings?

I think seven OT and two NT, but not all are required. Usually our parish reads them all. Adults get baptised and confirmed, candles are lit, palms are burned (we have a Weber grill out front) - it is all quite lovely.

I find iconography very interesting, too, so I'd be interested to hear if the purple flower represents anything.

I bet that most of the Baptists on the board will be surprised to hear that alot of our Baptist churches use iconography as well.......it's called Flannelgraph! ;)

Wow! I'm a Catholic who just signed up for these forums and was browsing the various groups, and saw that RCIA was being discussed in a Baptist/Anabaptist forum. Well, I cringed, expecting the worst. You folks sure have surprised me (pleasantly so). I salute you all for your graciousness in discussing things Catholic. Thank you for your good example.
