Israelis learning English have trouble, too. Look at the similar shapes between small g and small q, small b and small d and small p. Look at the similarity between t, l, and f. You don't think they're similar because you're used to them! In the same way, I don't think ג and נ look similar (since I notice the difference between the pen strokes), nor do ס and ם or ח and ה and ת. When you recognize them as letters, it doesn't matter that they are "similar," since there is obvious opposition in their shapes.

In other words.... you're gonna just have to get used to it, like you did in English without really noticing.

You're right! I never really thought of it like that!
I used to get d and b mixed up all the time when I was little.

I will say that akhlah.com has some alphabet and Hebrew helps. Do you want a link? It's a site designed to teach children Hebrew. I don't really recommend it, since I'm a hard-liner on these issues. But, if you think it will help, I'll give a direct link.
