  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Wedding challenge

My cousins are a blessing. It was just a curious turn of mind. I wasn't distressed, rather it was a chuckle. Besides, my cousin who got married is in her early twenties, and the population was such that the people there were either family, married and my age, or late teens / early twenties. I was a unique quantity as the only single my age there alone without a date, and escorting my mom. It was a beautiful evening, though, and the first opportunity to drive my new suit.

I am glad to hear you made it through the wedding challenge. Consider yourself blessed, I don't have so many cousins and they are definitely not cute even. ;)

Had my own wedding challenge, survived unscathed :p Although I did cry a bit. It was so beautiful to witness a Christ centered wedding, where there is no question Who brought them together.
God bless.

Ok, here I go stirring the pot a little...I know that to many people, the thought of marrying a cousin, especially a 1st cousin, is *icky*, but it is actually legal in a number of states. And I could be mistaken on this, but wasn't that quite common in biblical times, and possibly in subsequent eras? If yes, then, while it may not be normative in our society, it's certainly not unheard of, and I don't see why one couldn't pursue a relationship with a 2nd cousin, unless it they just had a deeply ingrained bias against doing so, which I can understand. Just a thought.

Given that my cousins are all 10 years younger than me on my mom's side or the fact they even exist on the other side makes it more than just icky. When you mentioned that I got a full body shudder that I almost mistook for a seizure. Yuck.

LOL, ok, so for you it’s primarily an ‘age’ issue? And what’s wrong with your dad’s side of the fambly?

PS- Maybe it was a seizure??

LOL, whyyyyyyyyyyyy? No, really I don’t get it. Marrying extended relatives is common around the globe, especially among royalty.

Yeah, remember what happened to the Haspburgs. Since there was no more royalty for them to marry, they all married each other. A generation or two down the non-forking tree, and there were some freaks that were born into that family. At least one was so deformed that he was thought cursed.

[/culture]

If your family tree does not fork, you might be a redneck.

I went to my cousin Linsey's wedding this evening. Yes, that was a challenge and I dealt with it, but I have to know - why did God ordain that almost every interesting and attractive woman at the wedding (as in knockout) had to be one of my 2nd cousins?! (smile)
God's got a sense of humor, nothing you can do but laugh along with it sometimes.:D

My dad was sort of the "black sheep" of his family in the way that he has class and manners (when he feels like it) and isn't a drunk, psycho, lazy, stupid, or rude like the rest of his family and their offspring.

Besides, I second what another poster said- Parts of my family are screwed up enough without reproducing.

Actually, there was an article about all this in Discover magazine a few months back, and it mentioned the Hapsburgs. It was interesting, but I forgot most of what it said, lol. Anyway, they are an extreme case. Like you said, they did more than selective marrying of second cousins and more distant relatives, and that’s mostly why it went poorly for them, I believe.

Haha, pretty good! :)

No way, would I mess with you? I mean, you’re really tuff and stuff. You might hurt me! ;) In all seriousness though, I find it interesting. Why do people rule second cousins out as unthinkable potential spouses? Not to single anyone out, but Keil for instance. He seems so think some of his are quite charming. If it’s just a matter of ingrained cultural prejudice, that’s fine I suppose, but some act like it’s this crime against nature. Abraham was married to his half-sister! ;)

LOL, that is alarming. We might be related. Your father’s last name doesn’t start with a ‘B’ and end in a ‘Y’ does it?

No, I'm clear there. But we should definitely get together for coffee sometime and rag on our dysfuntional half-wit relatives. I've got some great stories involving paint thinner and lit pilot lights.

Then there's the one about the water skis, swimming pool, and the lawnmower...

I thank God daily that I am intelligent.

Keil, buddy.. Here is a piece of advice. Family get togethers are not a good place to pick up chicks. ;)
Really? Don't think I could have figured that one out?!

No need to worry with me on that account. They have a traditional dance at the reception in which people give small monetary gifts to the couple and then dance with the bride and groom. My cousin, Laura, was surprised when I put a gift in and then didn't dance with my cousin - sorry folks, I don't dance with newlyweds or married folk - limited exceptions include my long-married aunts, mother, and grandmother... none of whom dance. I'm more than willing to dance with my newly married wife... but she hasn't shown up yet. Some people just do take their own sweet time... :^)

And yes, my cousins are charming, and sweet... but they're my cousins. My job is protecting them, not chasing them!

Marrying first cousins is legal across Europe, in Canada and in many states - marring second cousins is even more acceptable. I would have had no qualms at all about maryring a second cousin (that is if I wasn't married and had a second cousin who I fell in love with!)

I say go for it and get to know them better!
