Hello all,

This is my first post. I just want to say hey to all. I was born again on Feb. 21st of this year. AMEN!

I'm looking for a website that lists acceptable/non-acceptable bands for christians. Reason being I want to go thru all my 'secular' music and toss the stuff that is not good for the soul. Some of the stuff is obvious(led zepplin, megadeath, etc.) but others I'm just not sure of. I've heard of a website that has such a list but cannot find it anywhere.

Thank you all,

Ron

There is no such thing as a list of unacceptable music, it needs to be based on your personal faith. If you think the music is harmful to you, then get rid of it. If not, go ahead and keep it (especially if its Zeppelin :p)

I agree with the pp. The music alone is not good/nor bad. How it effects you can be. If you feel pulled away from God when you listen then by all means put it away but if you are able to still walk strong why enjoying someone elses God-given ability and talent go for it.

I cringe at the thought of throwing out Zepplin cds, but that is me.

Anyway, here is a website that has rough (I emphasise rough) comparrisons between popular secular bands/genres and Christian bands. It is a place to start, but be sure to check out the bands yourself somewhere online where you can listen to clips of their music or something so you have a real idea about their sound.

Just because you're a Christian doesn't mean you can't listen to "un-Christian" music. Listen to what you want, but in case you have any misconceptions you can listen to Led Zepplin along with Relient K, or whatever.

Just so you know Megadeth's frontman became a christian a while back and their last few are from a christian standpoint (though not blatantly so)

And agreed with what the 2 people said above me, listen to what you feel God is telling you about music. Romans 14 sais that with issue's that aren't handle'd in the bible wether they are right or wrong (one example there is being vegetarian) is what you feel God is saying to you about it, he knows who you are and what will and won't be good for your relationship with him, if you feel he's convicting you of secular music than it's a good thing to get rid of it, but otherwise I don't really see the need.

Getting rid of "un-Christian" music shouldn't be something you feel obliged to do out of propriety.

If you listen to a Led album and you can't enjoy it or (as said before) you feel that God wants you to dump it, THAT is the time to get rid of it.

Basically, "acceptable and unacceptable" are only called that because of what other PEOPLE say.

Be strong and smart.

That's not FULLY true. If you are listening to something like Lamb of God or something that basically spits in the face of God...then that shows you have no real respect OR reverance for God. You can't reverance Him one second and then listen to something that slams Him the next. It shows a complete lack of seriousness for God.

I disagree, but we can leave it at that

Just because you're a Christian does not mean you have to live like you're in prison. Honestly, what strikes you as wrong about Queen?

Stop worrying and thinking that God will get mad at what music you listen to. That's ridiculous. He created the univerese, why do you think he would care what you're listening to?

Try instead to focus on being kind to your fellow man and overall just being a good person.
Though this was a quote from myself from a thread about Queen, it refers to how I feel about the subject in general.

But in the end, you'll most likely do what you feel is best, and let me just say this: if you do decide to get rid of music, please don't just throw it away. Give it to somebody you think might want it, or sell it, or give it to a record store..whatever. Don't just throw it away, that'd be a waste. I would definitely say giving it to somebody would be the best option, because music is a wonderful gift to give.

I agree with steeldisciple. I also say I dont doubt the talents of many secular artists, but you have to put into perspective of not just what you feel about it, whether or not you feel it is ok to listen to or not, but against what the Scripture says. A verse such as Philipphians 4:8, Colossians 3:23-24 and 1 Corinthians 10:31 are good verses to measure what we listen to against. We are allowed to enjoy what God has given us, but we dont always know if it is doing damage just because we dont feel it is in our lives.

I just want to say thanks for all the responses. I actually had a long (boring) response typed up a few days back but somehow I erased it before I could post it. I'll attempt it again...Please remember this is just my opinion, so when I say 'you' I don't meant YOU!

Tho my OP was a little vague, I'll tell you all my point of view. I do agree that if it's not convicting you it is probably fine....to a degree. On the other hand tho as someone mentioned above I don't see how any true christain could listen to something that is blatantly slamming God. Even it its not blatant but you know the bands feeling of hate for God I don't see how a christian could listen to this music. It's one thing if you don't think its affecting you, but what about the people around you? We are here to ...Love God with all our heart, soul and mind, and love our neighbor as ourself. We are here to worship our Lord, serve our Lord, and bear witness. How can we do these things by listening to music that is against God? God would not listen this stuff and He would not want us listening to this stuff.

You proclaim yourself a christian. You listen to rap songs that degrade women, talk of killing/raping, how cool drugs are and how much money can be had. Your non-christian buddy asks how you can listen to that stuff and proclaim yourself a person of God. I also ask this question. This could be another person not saved.

Ok, this is the short version of my perspective. As for my original post I could have worded it better. What I'm looking for is a site that lists bands that are KNOWN to go against God. I myself will NOT listen to any band that goes against God. I will NOT give away or sell the music either. I will throw it away. I will also use my better judgement for those bands whose beliefs are unknown. Rant over,

Putting 2 flame suits on for this one...also :prayer: about it.

Which is pretty obvious that you will feel uncomfortable with certain music regardless of who you are once you are born again. After all, as rferoni vbmenu_register("postmenu_26420645", true); stated, if the music is blasphemous or showing hate against God, not like you would be enjoying the lyrics.

who said anything about 'outlawing' bands? I don't know how more simply to put it. I am looking for any information that simply states wether a band has publicly stated they are against God. Even if a band hasn't stated they are against God but their lyrics are of such that it makes you think they are I would like to know so I can make my own decision. Yes I can find this info out on my own but I'm sure it's already available somewhere. Please understand I am all for free speech and our ability to live in a country where we can make our own decisions.

Welcome, brother, both to this forum and the fellowship of Believers as well. :) I'm very glad you've made it here.

What is and what is not acceptable is solely dependant on what God tells you is acceptable through A. His Word (The Bible), and B. The Holy Spirit.

The Bible is hazy when it comes to music and the like. If you want to see a good debate between the two major schools of thought regarding what is and what is not acceptable music, check out one of the older threads on this forum titled "Satanic Music." I debated another guy about what the Bible has to say regarding our music choices, and what we can infer on what God thinks about listening to different types of music.

Basically, what we can all agree on, is that secular music is not bad to listen to inherently, but really just depends on the message. A good rule of thumb is A. What does the music promote, and B. How does this music effect you?

If the music interferes with your relationship with God (which should be put above ALL other things in your life), then you should probably not listen to it. If it does not negatively affect your relationship with God or cause you to sin or anything, then there's no harm in it, even if it is secular.

For instance, you mentioned how you are going to throw out Megadeth. Did you know that Dave Mustaine accepted Christ and is now a believer? There's nothing inherently evil about Megadeth, and especially not now. Just use the Bible and the discernment granted by the Holy Spirit as a guide. Don't let anyone tell you "this band is bad" or "you shouldn't listen to this." Let God tell you that. "Ask and it shall be given unto you." Ask God to reveal to you if anything you listen to hurts your relationship with him. He'll let you know when you need to make a change.

If you want to talk more about this, feel free to contact me via an instant messenger or by email.

so we can listen to stuff that doesn't blatantly slap God in the face, or we can't listen to anything that we think is suspect of not being for God in any way shape or form? where's the line cause technically any secular music can slap God in the face?

personally i don't see any disrespect to some infinite being for listening to music. that kind of belittles God in my opinion if one thinks we can slap such a powerful being in the face because we listen to secular music.

be careful. you don't want to put yourself under the control of a human being's need/criticism because of their own life. be careful.
