webcams and Linux

hi - i plan to get linux but i have an issue.

i'd like a high quality webcam and planned to get a logitech or microsoft messenger one before i decided to get linux, luckily i didnt buy because im told it would have issues.

so can anyone think of some high quality alternatives that will work well with it? ive looked at the linux site but getting just a bit confused.

You could always use a Video Cam with a TV/Video Capture Card.

(Assuming Linux will support it & you can find drivers)

I really need to try one of those webcam things one of these days, part of the problem is with Linux is webcam support is really lousy. (Not so much a Linux problem, webcam manufacturers write drivers for Microsoft OS's)

There is a camera list of whats supported and whats not.

I guess what needs to be known is:

What Linux desktop you are running.
What kernel you are running.
If you've installed gcc 2.95 (a C Complier) for software.
Kernel source your running.

The current version of Kubuntu runs version 2.6.17.
