  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Web filters for PDA's or Proxies?

I'm thinking about getting a new PDA, preferably one with 802.11b/g support built in. The only concern I have is how to effectively filter web access for it. I can either put something such as SafeEyes or BeSafe on it (although I don't see support for these devices yet), or even better, I'd like to filter at a proxy server.

Does anyone know if:

a). there is a Palm or Windows Mobile based content filter?

b). bsafe (or other) installed on a proxy server (specifically ISA) that will filter any client using the proxy?

Just out of curiosity, why do you want to put a web filter on it? I don't know if there are any, but I personally and very anti-filtering. Not because I want to be able to look at...stuff. But because the companies block everything they don't agree with, and every one that I have experience with is inaccurate and a waste of money. They block things they shouldn't and don't block some things they should. But if you really want one, my suggestion would be to just google "PDA Proxy" or "PDA Web Filter"

I've made a committment to my wife that no computer will be in my house unless it has accountability or web filtering software on it. In my mind, that would include a PDA with web capabilities.

I'm just trying to find the best way to do this.

The best way would be to connect to the web from a Master Proxey server then.

Internet -> DLS/Cable -> ProxeyServer Computer -> HUB -> Rest of computers in house

This setup would only require the Main computer having the filtering software configured then. and All other system that connect to the network would be filtered through the Proxey Server, with no additional software required.

Ah. Do you have kids? Because I can understand that. What Quantos said is probably your best bet.

And if you do have kids, and that is why, you might want to keep up to date on ways to bypass a proxy server, just so you can stay one step ahead of them. I can almost guarentee they will try to get past it, and if they try long enough, they will probably succeed.

Actually if Every thing goes through a single Proxey server, and you only allow sites on a whitelist, there will be no way to get around it, short of Re-Wiring the network :)

Though you will Never want to allow a connection to other Proxey Servers :D

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a whitelist not a very good method? New sites are popping up all the time, so every time you want to access them, you'd have to add it to the list? Though if you want to block everything you don't want, it is definately better than any "scan the site" proxy.

And stuff like rewiring the network or cracking the passwords on the server computer are exactly what I'm talking about. My parents do know nearly as much about computers as I do, so pretty much no matter what, I can run rampant anywhere I want on our home network or on the internet. Luckily for them, I make the right decision and don't. But there was a time when I make bad choices. And the only way they could stop me is by catching me in the act and grounding me or w/e.

It's along the same lines as the theory that says that you should learn to be a hacker, because only then can you be fully prepared to protect yourself from an attack.
