Jim M said:So, God chastens us by the Word. How does that work? Wouldnt the Word only work on a receptive heart and a receptive heart would not need chastening. What about the Christian with the calloused heart, the deaf ear, the closed mind? How does God chasten such a child?
How did God chasten the Corinthians who abused the Lords Table? It wasnt with the Word, Zub, it was with sickness and death. 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lords[ body. 30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world (1 Cor. 11).
Citizen of the Kingdom said:I couldn't find the book I was looking for about Psalm 23
What I remember was that the rod was used for protecting the sheep from going into danger and the staff was for training and guidence.
Psalm 23:4
even tho I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death
I fear no evil
for You are with me
Your rod and your staff
the comfort me.
I don't know if this helped or not.I think your asking in what ways He disciplines. Only disciples are disciplined.

Jim M said:So, God chastening His flock is always smashing the sheepies heads. I think they call this exaggeration.
Some people think disciplining a child with a good biblical spanking is child-abuse, too, but it is only because they do not understand the Word.
What we may consider severe or painful or even catastrophic may not mean the same thing to God, especially when it is for our ultimate good. However harsh the disciple, God can comfort us in it and make it work to our good.
Zzub said:Tell you what Tree, next time you get the flu, don't rebuke it and walk in divine health, come and visit me, and I can have it too.
Then I can grow in God.
How about I just go and slice my arms with a knife now to teach me some more and have a relationship with the Lord?
I can't have one with His Word, that would be too simple.

They is a figure of speech, Zz, something you seem to be having a bit of a problem with.Zzub said:Who is they? Friends of yours?
Hmmmm. So, when do we stop being children, Zz? When my son was 13 he thought he was too mature to spank, too. He was wrong.Zzub said:I am not one of those people. Ask my children about Mr. Smacky. Yes, but if I still spanked my children when they were 30, then I would be abusing them. I am a mature son of God, and God doesn't smack me about the head to get my attention.
If I did not tell them it was something they need to consider I would not love them very much.Zzub said:I wonder how harsh sick people think you are when you are telling them they need to learn more about God, and are slack hearers and cold hearted.
JimfromOhio said:Grace in Heaven? Ummm... never saw that in the Bible. When the Angels sinned only ONCE, He didn't give them grace, instead, He thew them out of heaven.
