so sorry to rain on the parade, but it's not going to happen.

Not this week anyway. Let's let Erwin get everything working before we throw more stuff at him! ;)

I'm actually a big fan of a formal debate forum. It would just have to be USED occasionally. Last time we proposed a formal debate forum, it was shot down primarily because members thought nobody would post there. Do we have people interested in one-on-one debates now?

I think the answer is at least tentatively yes. It'd be nice to get a bit more input (other than spammy smilies) either for or against while we wait for CF to become fully operational again.

@TheBear -- don't let me forget. Send me a PM in a week or two when requesting a new forum won't get drowned by the dozens of huge issues we've been pointing out since the upgrade.

Never say never. :p

That is fully understandable. This is just a continuation of the discussion started before the upgrade.

Great! I can count on your support then.

Take a look at both the GA and Politics formal debate sub-forums. You will see that GA's formal debate sub-forum, has about 30 formal debates since August 2003. You will also notice that in the Politics formal debate sub-forum, has about 20 formal debates since August 2004. That averages out to about one debate per month. :)

I think the answer is at least tentatively yes. It'd be nice to get a bit more input than a few more spammy smilies either for or against while we wait for CF to become fully operational again.
Awsome!

I fully understand the current upgrade situation. :) And don't worry, I won't let you forget about this sub-forum idea. :p

I love the idea, I do think it would have to be better organized then the formal debate forum. This forum is well moderated and it could easily be a mess, hats off to the moderators on here.

I know that the upgrades are kind of buggy right now, I wouldn't dream of adding to the workload Erwin has at this time. I think this would be a good time to work on how the formal debate forum would look on CE.

There would have to be a clear subject to debate with the primary issues laid out in the invitation. I don't think there is a need to have a special forum just for invitations, they could be made on here, no problem. They would have to agree on the source material they will be debating with so their opponent has the chance to become aquainted with it.

Civility is crucial, they would have to be held to a stricter level of decorum. I say that knowing full well that I write as much satire as anyone on here. A formal debate could include some of that but only when it is well supported.

I have enjoyed debating evolutionists on here in the formal debate forum a lot. I relish the opportunity debate them openly in a formal debate. I look forward to further discussion of this idea and sincerly hope it turns into something in time.

Grace and peace,
Mark

I don't have enough time to read the thread, but if we were to open a Formal Debate Area, the debate should be about evolution. Arguments against YEC or ID are pointless, as neither are scientific theories and undoubtedly ad-hoc will be used. So, a Formal-Debate-About-Evolution-Area would make more sense...

Anyway, I support this idea. Most of this debate on this forum is now trash, so a Formal Debate Area would be nice.

Sorry... I don't have $0.02. xP

Edit: And when I say the debate should be about evolution, I mean that YECers and OECers and whonot trying to argue against evolution, and evolutionists arguing for evolution.

Thank you!

The topics of debate would be any topic which is appropriate discussion in the C&E forum. It would be one-on-one, by invitation only - structured the same as the current formal debate areas in General Apologetics and in Politics. And in the same structure, there should be a debate peanut gallery.

It's going to get done. We just have to wait until Erwin is done working out all the site upgrades and bugs. :)

We were holding off proceeding with this until Erwin was finished with the system upgrade. I was just keeping this thread bumped so I wouldn't forget. :p

I just checked the announcements forum. Erwin has recently announced that all upgrade work is complete.
