It is blatently obvious that the OPster has no life experience in the workforce. Thinks $10.00 an hour is a wage one can exist on! No, a person cannot exist on this wage. These days, this is the allowance of a High Schooler. Someone that lives with their parents and has virtually no expenses.

I know a guy who is married and living on like $6.25 and hour.

$10 (X) 2080hrs = $20,080.
After %15 tax = $15,028.

Actually, 15% tax would be closer to $3000, not $5000.

(10% of 20,000/2 x 3)

Personally, I wouldn't take mortgage advice or information from someone who claims that $5000 is 15% of $20000.

I don't think I have ever worked a 9 to 5 job. The Army is more of a "5 to 5" job. But whatever. It's simple stuff and you get money.
I am happy that I help pay your salary. What are you doing over there for me? I really would like to know because if it is simple stuff then I would recommend that we drop your pay to ten dollars an hour and make you pay for your own health and dental insurance. I really hope I am not buying you any lunches that are free to you.

No out of pocket expenses for meals other than your taxes? Is that what you are saying?

25% of my monthly pay, pluse 25% of any bonuses I get, go to taxes. The government automatically deducts money from me for meals, because I live in the barracks and they assume I eat at the chowhall.

It's interesting how actual life experience keeps coming back to slap JustOneWay's arguments in the face. I wonder how many times he has to be proven wrong before he'll just say, "Wow, I was really wrong about that..."?

JOW is not like that man, okay. He's one of the most level headed debaters on this site, and a pal. We disagree sometimes with certain issues, but most of the time we see eye to eye. His response to me was one of curiousness and nothing more.

Let me restate it. When you say that a person who makes $10 per hour cannot buy a home, and you clearly imply that it'll leave that person living under a bridge, you do not know what you're talking about.

Tell me... Are you aware of the fact that First Time Homebuyers can get a mortgage loan for 2.25% - 3.25%, with 0% or 5% downpayment?

And another question: Are you assuming that, in order to live, a person must drive a new SUV and live in a $350,000 home?
just like the op, you are making the argument that a grand lifestyle for everyone is what anyone is fighting for. it is totally ridiculous and a complete strawman. this kind of hyperbole does nothing to make your case. it makes you look a tad absurd, as you don't address the issue as it really is and re-characterize it into something you can attack. no one is trying to make the $100k+ income mandatory. the op is making the same argument.
i am in finance. it would take an exceptional situation for someone making $10/hour to be able to purchase a home. most jobs at that level do not provide insurance, but rather at best make it available. if the worker buys it, they have very little left over for anything else. this is the walmart model.
you are living in some kind of removed fantasy world.

when the good parsons fictitious $10/hr homeowner starts paying for the kids that are going to drive down the taxes they pay, where will the income come from to supply the children with clothes, food, school supplies, etc.?
perhaps with his four homes, he is a bit out of touch with the guy working at walmart who can't afford his health insurance which is NOT supplied, or maybe he thinks providing insurance for a family is a luxury that the average worker does not deserve. if you are bringing home $400/week, and $500 goes to rent, $150 for car payment, $60 for car insurance, $200 for food, $200 for health insurance, $25 co-pays, $100 for gas, $30 for electric, $15 for water, $30 for telephone. do any of these seem outrageous? they seem next to impossible to me, but let's give our man the benefit of the doubt. he's a great shopper, never goes out, never needs new clothes, has no entertainment of any kind in his life, not tv, not newspapers, not movies, not music, nothing. never goes out, has no girlfriend, no computer costs. to take home his $400/week he is already working 50 hours to get the overtime to rise to this level. so he has $290 to save up his downpayment for the house, which when he gets it he will incur the additional expenses of taxes on the home, insurance on the home (he was living without renters insurance before because he couldn't afford to protect his belongings, but the mortgage people will force him to do it), pmi insurance until he has 20% equity in the home, and the cost of any and all repairs and upkeep to the home that had been the responsibility of the landlord when he was renting.
this is ridiculous.

That has HARDLY been my experience with him. ^_^
Christian marine has earned respect by being a fair and non-judgmental poster, dedicated defender of the country and humanitarian for the Iraqi cause. I give respect where it is due.

Why $10 an hour discussion?

I believe a person can earn a living on less. When I got out of the military, I earned minimum wage for 3 months, then got a raise. I survived.
Until I went back to college, I made less then $10 an hour.
I rented an apartment, and still had some money to take my girlfriend out once in a while.

Poeple today believe the necessitys include:
Advanced Cable tv, one cell phone(at least), high speed internet, a newer car, a new large tv, and eating out or other special occasions regularly.

Starting out may mean having a roommate, doing without a cell, making do with a small "old fashion"digital tv, eating out is a special occasion. And making do with a late model car, rather then a new one.

People want to start out with a silver spoon, rather then looking forward to earning the niceties.

I only support short term limited time handouts to get people on thier feet. Offer a helping hand, not a hammock.
