  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Darwin has nothing to do with it at this point. He extrapolated an origins theory based on observations he made about natural selection, which is pretty well supported by similar observations in every biome on earth. What he would or would not believe in light of later discoveries is irrelevant, because the discoveries speak for themselves.

And in my opinion, it is also evidence of a creator.

This is funny because I am in the exact opposite boat as you:) I was born and raised on evolution. Both my parents were scientists, and I'm an environmental scientist. Having converted to Christianity over the past year, I'm now a young earth creationist. I know most Christians probably don't even hold that view (as my husband pointed out) but I can't help but believe in the bible as the Word of God. It is fundamental to my faith. I could never be a Christian before because I continually questioned every aspect of the bible and could not rely on faith. Having personally witnessed so many miracles in my life and having almost finished reading the bible I have come to the conclusion that this is God's earth and He is in complete control. I don't bother trying to figure out the physics and/or logistics of a 6-day creation week or any other miracle in the bible. God is in control and He makes it happen. Just my two cents:) My husband is probably just as freaked out as your wife!!!

My husband and I are in the same situation, except that we both enjoy the discussions we have on the topic. There was a time that we argued about it and weren't able to talk about it without it causing conflict, but we're learning to respect each other's viewpoints even if we don't agree.
One book that I found helpful was 'Seven Days that Divide the World' by John Lennox. It takes a scientific view, but without discounting the views of young-earth creationists as uneducated or ignorant, which a lot of scientists seem to do. I very much appreciated the author's respectful approach and lack of "know-it-all" attitude.
I also appreciate in conversations with my husband that he takes my questions and concerns seriously and tries to answer them honestly, even if his answer is "I don't know". It may be that you and your wife never fully agree on this issue, but it is likely that you can find a way to talk about it so that it doesn't create conflict between you.

Whenever she talks about 6-day creation, change the subject to Christ. He's all that matters anyway.

God bless :)

I agree with seeingeyes. It is not important what happened in Creation/evolution history but to focus on Christ is paramount. In the end, when you get to Heaven you will be able to find out what happened in history and have your questions answered.

My wife and I both believe the universe is old. We believe God gave us intellect in order to better know him and his creation. The thing is, I'm not beholden to one version of genesis or another. If it ends up being that God made it all in 6 literal days, I'd still be just as amazed. But why would God make the world in an instant, but fill it with extremely convincing evidence to the contrary? God is righteous and that means he is honest and would never deceive us. Therefore, I believe the earth is old. Also, remember that in Genesis, the words used for periods of time, such as days, don't mean 24 hours. "Day" is just the word we happened to translate it as. I think people often mistakenly read the Bible literally, not realizing that the original meaning is occasionally lost in translation. In my experience, the most literal interpreters of the Bible often know the least about what the original scriptures really said.

My wife happens to agree, but a couple of her family members do not. It has led to some interesting discussions but we all know what really matters in the end.

I've come to also believe that the earth is old. I believe that a day could mean something very different to God.
