We Asked Generation Z to Pick a Name. It Wasn’t Generation Z.

Go visit Tumblr. Or maybe don't. It is a cesspool.

No need. Baby boomers gave us right-wing talk radio, which has, for the last 25 years, flooded all the non-urban parts of this country with 3+ hours of whining every weekday afternoon.

I'm not saying Tumblr is great, but the kiddos still have a ways to go to catch up to grandpa.

I've always chuckled at the bashing of younger generations because the basher used to be part of a younger generation that was bashed, the cycle continues. People tend to look at their own generation with great fondness, often highlighting the positives and ignoring the negatives. There is also the person that will bash their own generation, it seems like that is done to curry favor with other generations. I never understood the bashing, there is good and bad among every generation, and there will continue to be good and bad things in future generations.

LoL. I don't care for talk radio, but it has nothing on Tumblr. When you need trigger warnings for your crappy fanfics, or are freaked out because someone doesn't believe that you have headmates or are an otherkin... yeah.

Also, I don't visit 4chan, but the time the idiots over at Tumblr decided to raid those boards is rather infamous online, and their response to the counter raid is very telling. Also, look up dashcon for the time they tried to make a convention.

There's got to be some group people can make fun of that will not be taken all seriously and stuff. We want to laugh! And we want to laugh at someone else. Because it makes us feel good.

...here we get to laugh at kids. Because there's nothing they can do about it. :)

I'm gonna assume that you didn't grow up in an ultra-conservative church, i.e. something at least as far right as southern baptists in the 1980's, because my folk were all about getting triggered. We had boycotts against Disney for loving teh gheys and against Johnson & Johnson (IIRC) for having some kind of "satanic" or "occultish" elements in their corporate logo. I once took a current events class, wherein we had a field trip to a music store to pick out all the satanic imagery in the album cover art. Tipper Gore was just the tip of the iceberg.

IMO, the only reason the Tumblr crowd has any voice today is because of the internet. If we'd had internet back in the 80's, oh man...

No, I did. However, the Tumblr / Progressives have become the new Puritans. The problem is that Disney generally ignored the super fundamentalists, but tend to bow to these types or even get into bed with them.

The creativity in my brain has logged out for the night so I can't think of a name for the generation I belong to. Generation Z and Post-Millennial have been used for a few years, labels affixed to us regardless as to whether they fit, and they sort of seem stuck now. One of my friends actually started a successful Generation Z consulting firm and even though he dislikes the name, he continued to use it because it's what's most identifiable. Both seem more like addenda. Though, the quest to decide on a name for a generation isn't unique to mine....whatever mine is. In a 1994 college commencement speech Kurt Vonnegut told the graduates, "Now you young twerps want a new name for your generation? Probably not, you just want jobs, right? Well, the media do us all such tremendous favors when they call you Generation X, right? Two clicks from the very end of the alphabet. I hereby declare you Generation A, as much at the beginning of a series of astonishing triumphs and failures as Adam and Eve were so long ago." I actually kind of prefer Generation A instead of Z, and it feels more fitting for a generation that is the first to grow up in the new millennium.

Anyways, so the Vonnegut quote is in the epigraph to Douglas Coupland's Generation A, which was written in the 2000s in the same format as his early 90s book Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture. The bookended generations have commonality in their perspectives; it's mainly their technology that sets them apart. At that time he wrote X he said that it was for people his age who were born in the 1960s and were sick of stupid labels, sick of being marginalized in lousy jobs, and tired of hearing about themselves from others. That's a sentiment that I think basically every generation has had. Anyways, so the irony of it is that he was sick of labels, and yet he inadvertently popularized the labeling of his generation as Gen X. And by doing that, it inevitably lead to Y (until that was replaced with "Millennial" and now Z. At least he didn't start with A, or we'd now be known as Generation C.

Edit:
I'm not fond of the name but I sort of :greenheart: what she said anyways:
The oldest respondent to give her age was 91-year-old Annette Benedict, of the Bronx. “I figure you’re not an ageist,” she wrote, a gambit that all but ensured her inclusion. Her suggested name was The Thumbies, for the digit used to operate smartphones. “I think that suits them,” she said, chuckling, when I called her.

Yeah, true... I was born in 77, so being at the tail end of gen x, and a little prior to mellenial might make me an xennial too.

...Party on rambot! :D

You were born in 1977?! From previous posts I'd assumed you were in your 50s or beyond because you have kids who are older than I am.

Wow. You're the same age as my uncle Dino (that's not his real name, but the childhood nickname stuck). My dad is the oldest - he was born in the 1960s, and Dino is the youngest. My uncles still call him the Backstreet Boy because he used to dress like one back when they were popular.

It's true. My wife and I are high school sweet hearts, and our oldest was born when I was 17. That prevented my wife from continuing her education, but I continued on with mine, and with the help of family I was able to do well enough to become the sole provider for our family.

It all worked out in the end with a lot of hard work and determination. We beat the odds.

...In fact, not to toot my own horn, but I'm the youngest of my own siblings, and I do better than they do, even though they're smarter than I am, and they also did things the "right" way. :D

Someone's watching over me. I know it! :prayer:
