  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've always understood this passage to refer to the swearing of elaborate oaths in an attempt to impress people with your seriousness and piety. I don't see any problem with a simple oath in, for example court.
I would agree that this captures the essential teachign of the passage. Real integrity is more valuable than a big dramatic show of how honest we are.

well when you are taking that verse out of context it is more refering to pledging an oath to other gods or anyone else besides God. i dont believe it means that you pledge an oath to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

and FYI many courts dont swear on the Bible anymore because many people are not Christian so they wont swear on a Bible and our world is slowly going to burn in Hell.
When you say taking the verse out of context, which context are you refering to? The James 5:12 or the other related passages? It seems clear to me that the James 5:12 passage refers back to the Matthew 5:33 passage.

Matthew 5:33-

" Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ' you shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.' But I say to you, Do not swear at all,..... Let your word be 'yes, yes or no, no;' anything more than this comes from the evil one."

Leviticus 19:11,12
" You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; and you shall not lie to one another. And you shall not swear falsely by my name, profaning the name of your God,..."

I thought maybe I should post the reference in the law that Jesus was refering back to in Matthew 5. I would say that in context the passage is dealing with falsehood and lying primarially.

Well, it says not to swear, but to tell the truth all the time.

I wouldn't swear on a Bible; I believe it to be expressly forbidden. I don't swear oaths in general. If you can't trust me to tell the truth, why would you trust me to tell you that I'm telling you the truth?

Let me tell you what I've learned from being in court: People lie under oath ALL THE TIME.

Better, I think, that we not profane the Bible, or the name of God, in meaningless oaths. Me, I refuse to be sworn in, and I tell the truth. This, it seems to me, is the only available option.
