Water sources

I was just wondering how go about setting up a secondary water source in a subruban property.

I know rainwater tanks that can catch rainwater from the roof but wondering if its to be drinkable what you would need, esp if your roof is a tile roof or a garaged tin roof...

Also how to go about making a pond or stream in your garden? Would you need a pondliner or can you just dig a ditch and use rocks? What about pumps?
