Just a note to keep the thread from being derailed into another doomed-to-be-closed homosexuality thread, the Pompeii artwork was essentially unlimited in the kinds of couplings (and triplings, and quadruplings, and mildly delusional self-portraits) it portrayed.

I was reading an article about ancient Pompeii and how well preserved it is. The anicient ruins, the streets, even ash over bodies cast as they were covered. Then came many of the murals. They had all kinds of sexual deviancy on them from induction ceremonies to outright orgies. So did God destroy Pompeii for the same reasons he destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah? Over indulgence of sexual sin?
It probably had a hand in making God decide whether to stay his hand or not.
Very interesting thought indeed, both on the how and the why.

Again, "sexual sin" was not the only reason for Sodom's destruction, nor was it even listed first — "arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy" are all listed before sexual sin. We need to remember this when we start pointing the finger of blame in any particular direction.

Yep; murder is worse.

A Greek historian visited Athens and attended a festival to Dyonisis. The Reader's Digest version of his account of that festival was basically "50,000 screaming, yelling, drunken bodies engaged in various acts and degrees of the flesh." Now THAT....is a party. Festivals like that were common as part of Greek religious tradition.

If God wanted to smite, he missed.

DI presented it as natural phenomenon. makes sense to me.

Pompeii is one of the most fascinating cities preserved from antiquity. Porno was one of the bad things going for this cities. Obviously Pompeii was both and economic and influential city in the empire. Commerce, political culture, art, science, et al were all studied here. We cannot ignore the good that came from this city and the contributions it has made to our understanding of the ancient Roman world.:)

What the heck?!!

everyday all round the world people are commiting these "grevious sins", even in bible-lead countries and counties all across the world at any time. Yet god would supposedly hit on one small area? As a warning? why? he knows people carry on.

please, if he was that mad he'd hit the whole world and wipe us out entirely.

The Bible shows that God always gives plenty of warning before the only solution is punishment. Just look at the old testement, most of it is about God repeatedly warning the Isarelites to turn away from sin. Based on what is written on the Bible though I'd say that if Pompei was hit by God -and note I'm not saying he did- then it was either to destory a nest of sin (like Sodom) or to warn everyone that God has just about had it with you (like the capture of the North kingdom, giving people in the south to repent and save themselfs).

Crazy? I think it’s worse that crazy. More than all the reason and logic that denies the existence of God, Christians claiming that God causes tsunamis as well as untold other acts of evil in this world are single handedly promoting the most powerful argument against God that there could ever be!

Pompeii may have had some warning. In AD 65 the city was leveled by an earthquake?
