  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Was Adam indwelled by the Holy Spirit before the fall?

Interesting question. He was made in the image of God which would include the Holy Spirit. He then disobeyed and experience spiritual death which with include the departure of the Holy Spirit.

There are different views as to what it means to be made in the image of God.

Many believe all humans are made in the image of God. Genesis 9:6
I would agree with that but we are not exactly has Adam was, I would suggest the the Holy Spirit comes to us to invite us to accept Jesus, if we accept the Holy Spirit stays to help us develop as believers, if we reject the Holy Spirit we have made our decision and the Holy Spirit has no reason to stay with us.

I think Adam’s relationship with God was a bit tenuous, certainly under-appreciated by him, taken for granted, not yet confirmed or “owned”. Adam was rather neutral, obviously open to drawing away from God rather than nearer, which might’ve meant eating from the Tree of Life. Adam didn’t yet see and value just what was standing in front of him; he didn’t yet love God, let alone love him with his whole heart, soul, mind, and strength, to put it another way. He didn’t yet really know God, or want to know Him, and that knowledge is the essence of eternal life (John 17:3). That would take some maturing, with time, experience, revelation, and grace while spending time in exile, like a prodigal, from his Creator who always loved and wanted the very best for him.

I think Adam possessed the Holy Spirit-just didn’t know what he had.

Well I have a different take...

When referring to the New Covenant to come, both Jeremiah and Ezekiel predict that God would indwell believers and in so doing, seal them against disobedience by His indwelling Fear.

If Adam and Eve had this indwelling Fear of God they would never have eaten the forbidden fruit.

I conclude then that God's plan of salvation through Jesus took care of the human weakness and propensity to sin by personally indwelling them as promised.

Yes, but was God's presence indwelling ?

This was predicted to happen after the crucifixion as part of the promise of the New Covenant.

Yes your latter part is correct the fact he is all in one ,his presence would have been in dwelling in them at that time, after the crucifixion, came the Holy Spirit , that is our equivalent to his presence.

 God breathed into Adam. God's breath is The Holy Spirit. They did have Fear of the Lord.

There is no creation ever made without the Fear of the Lord indwelling in them. God wouldn't give them a commandment and then punish them if He made them so. Whatever God's hand made, has God's image in it according to His purpose.

Adam and Eve weren't mature enough against the schemes of evil and got deceived. It is why God's sacrificial Lamb was provided that we may know LOVE, and that obedience be based on love and not fear alone. By fear alone, we cannot.

Adam messed up when he added to God's command to Eve about the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, telling her that if she even touched the fruit, that she would die, and Satan saw this as his golden opportunity to tempt Eve into risking death by, touching it at first, telling her that God was lying and she would not die, and when she saw that she touched it and did not die, she then brought the fruit to Adam and told him all about it, and then they, together, both ate it, and/or but, did not die immediately, etc...

The Bible also says that Eve was thoroughly deceived or deceived completely, but that Adam was not at all deceived at all, etc...

So Adam had to have known immediately upon Eve coming back with the fruit. So, why did he not say anything to Eve? and why did he just decide to eat the fruit with her when he fully knew, etc...?

Well, that is the question now isn't it...? What was going on in Adam's head and heart at that time, etc...?

I think it was because of "Love" though, Love for his wife, etc...

But he was in a position to where he had to choose between his Love for her, and his Love for God, etc, and probably also had his mistake in mind also or as well, and maybe not knowing what God was going to do about it all when He showed back up again or returned, but may have maybe feared for his wife, and so maybe decided to share in her fate, also maybe knowing that he might have had to share in her fate anyway, regardless, because it was his error and his mistake really, but it was also only Eve and Eve only who choose to listen to the serpent over Adam and God, and directly disobey God, even though Adam may have also, but indirectly, with his mistake with Eve, with adding to God's commandments or Word with Eve, etc...

Anyway,

God Bless!

I don't think that scripture speaks of ANYONE being INDWELT by the Holy Spirit ... prior to Pentecost. The OT scriptures speak of the Spirit "resting upon" certain people ... not including Adam.

I don’t think this is the case because for me personally I feel that the Holy Spirit had been calling me to Christ for most of my life. I think many people may have experienced this where they were called several times over a long period of time.

And yet looking at the history of humanity as a result of the Fall with its evils: sin, suffering, pain, and death, along with the good we experience here, combined with God’s dealings with man down through the centuries make little sense IMO if at the end of the day God simply just makes it all better, for some at least, by injecting them with a Fear of God.

Here we have the perfect milieu in which to begin to cultivate that fear, with a recognition of our need for Him, moving into an increasing level of love for Him. Grace is always in the background revealing and drawing and moving us towards Him while the experience in a world alienated and in exile from Him should draw us away from the “freedom”, with its consquences, which originally attracted Adam.

Fear didn't come in until after the fruit was eaten, or after the fall, etc... Before that all was Love, and Peace, and Satisfaction, and Bliss, and overwhelming Contentment, etc, it's just that a mistake was made by Adam, which then landed him into conflict between Love's, etc...

Maybe he thought they would both just die together, and maybe it was by some measure of God's Grace, Love, Truth, Mercy, Forgiveness, etc, etc, that they did not maybe, etc... "Who knows", etc...?

Their world might have had to change, having handed it over to Satan, or the wicked one, etc, but maybe it could be made to where it would only be temporary for a time maybe, etc, and maybe to where God could fix in or by the end maybe, etc...

Again, "who knows", etc...?

God Bless!

Sure. The Holy Spirit was not new on Pentecost. All the prophets spoke by God's spirit, not their own. Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Job, etc. Jesus even said plainly that David wrote by the spirit. Why would Adam be excluded? Why would anyone think the spirit of God left him after the fall? Did God abandon David when he sinned, or the rest of us today after we sin?
