  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

War is inevitable: my thoughts

I'm curious to know.

Israel isn't the issue at hand.

When will Israel be the issue at hand? I mean, it's all very well to say "She's not the issue at hand", but her human rights violations are stacking up, and so are her breaches of UN resolutions. We do ourselves no favours by ignoring the issue.

As an avid supporter of Israel and her claim to the land, it grieves me to criticise her. But I cannot turn a blind eye to her indiscretions, and I find it extremely disturbing that she has been permitted to continue in this vein for so long.

The problem is that this blatant double standard simply detracts from any credibility that Britain, Australia and the US might have had in attacking Iraq on the basis of a broken UN resolution. People are going to ask "But what about Israel?", and if that question is never answered, they'll be justified in accusing Israel's supporters of hypocrisy.

Good question:

Why is the main option, the ultimate resolution to all this contention with Iraq, minimized and disregarded?

Why does Saddam's role in all this, take a back seat to all the politically charged debate?

Why?

I don't know. But I do know that it certainly hasn't taken a back seat with me.

I've openly advocated the assasination of Hussein as a perfectly viable alternative to the war. In fact, I'm simply puzzled that it was never attempted in the 12 years which followed Desert Storm.

The US made about 40 attempts to assasinate Castro, IIRC. Why hasn't she taken a shot at Hussein?

Seems to me that this would be a jolly good idea.

Because firstly, Saddam was a man the West could do business with, so he was everyone's friend for a while, then obviously the relationship soured and he became chief enemy number 1. During the Gulf War, there were several attempts made at locating and killing him. He used to be driven around Iraq in old taxis, cars, trucks and buses... During the war he was filmed briefing his senior staff in a winnebago and USAF pilots were told to target winnebagos if they saw any.

Israel has also come close to assassianting him, but the problem now is Saddam has three or four doubles who actually take his place at government meetings, TV broadcasts and public appearances. Even if you took a shot at him, he would still be there, which is why it's almost impossible to locate him.

Yes, but the relationship obviously soured at least 12 years ago, so there's been at least a decade for somebody to do something about it. That's the point I am making.

I think it's fair to assume that any intelligence agency worth its salt would not be stymied by the use of a few doubles.

These people are in the business of knowing who's who. Correctly identifying the target and ignoring the distractions is an essential part of the counter-espionage industry.

Just read Peter Wright's Spycatcher.

The intelligence agencies know who the doubles are. A former double even defected to the West. It's not about knowing who's who. It's about knowing the movements of the actual president from one day to the next, getting a strike team (one assassin plus back up group) in and tracking those movements, getting them into one of Saddam's palaces undetected and striking. It's easy enough to read a book and tell it how it is, but in practise it's a lot harder to get a clean shot. Remember once they've tried and failed, Saddam will just up his security and change his movements, then it's another few years trying to pin point his movements...

Because US involvement has nothing to do with Saddam, humanitarian relief, or curtailing WMD.  The transparent unbelievability of those justifications is what makes people keep looking and focusing on other things.

I'm comparing this to the 1st Gulf War - sure, there were peace protesters, but there was also a verifiable event that everyone could point to.  The invasion of Kuwait was proof.  Now we still went in there because of oil - don't kid yourself.  But we still had a bona fide pivotal event that 99% of the world said was a clear aggression and violation.  Moreover, the 1st Pres. Bush didn't seem to be in a hurry.  In fact, he took his time to gather the coalition, press his case, etc. and strike when everything was in place.  In contrast, this Pres. Bush can't make the case for war, doesn't have a plan for after the war, and can't explain why NKorea is getting nearly zero attention when in reality they are the bigger threat.

As a Christian, Born again of God's Spirit I became part of the Abraham Covenenant through the work that Jesus Christ did at Calvary, though I am a Gentile. I know that Israel is surrounded by Arab countries who have considerable hatred for this country. As a Christian, I am duty bound to support, encourage and pray for God's chosen People.
