Almost every single person I have ever asked a question like that in the past (before I was Christian and I used to ask people "how can I start reading the Bible?") has given me the same response:
- Start with the Book of John and branch out into the rest of the New Testament from there
- SKIP the geneologies
- Don't feel obligated to go through it from cover to cover
- The Old Testament is *hard work* to read at times, do not feel discouraged when eventually reading through it
These things are actually accurate. The Gospel of John is a beautiful read. It often helps to start there and branch out.
You don't necessarily have to sit down and read this thing cover to cover

You don't have to start at Genesis and go page by page.
Do not even touch Revelations for some time to come, its confusing enough as it is even for highly experienced theologians let alone us regular people
SKIP the geneologies! *ducks flying tomatoes* I am so serious, you can go back and read them if you really really really want to, but for the time being, for goodness sake, skip them, they will only discourage you from ever even wanting to pick up the Bible. I know how hard it is to read through them. Trust me, it won't affect the rest of what you are reading all that much if you *skip it*
Just take it one step at a time. Read a little here and a little there, day by day. You don't have to complete entire books in a day. You don't even have to read an entire page a day if you don't want to. Read a SMALL bit, absorb it, think about it, pray about it, and move on.
You can do it

The Bible was meant to be read. It shouldn't really be a chore, we should look forward to it, but it *is* hard sometimes there is no question. But this is God's Word revealed to us, and He wants you to know what He has to say! So take is slowly.
