• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I want to post in here because I've been having "thoughts" of self-injury. I am here to seek help...this isn't a threat to me or anything...I'm seeking peer support on this...

I've been having a very difficult time lately with myself. With sleeping and everything. I would never think of hurting myself or anything. I'm just getting kind of tired of this and I'm not sure what to do. Anyways, what do I do when I get thoughts of self-injury? Are there any meditation techniques or anything I can do for this? I would really appreciate some support. Thank you!

Please RS, never be afraid to post in here. Never, ever.

Sometimes, I think a tired mind can cause us not to be able to sleep. Once people said "you are 'overtired'" to people who had trouble sleeping, and getting their days and nights together. Stangely enough, I think the old adage still stands. A tired mind can cause one to suffer with a type of insomnia.
The greatest computer in the world is the human brain. Nothing can beat it. But, from over stress, or overwork, it can become tired.
There are many ways to relax the mind. Listening to soft music with the lights dimmed,
massaging your feet, particularly the tips of your big toes and in the centre of the big toe, then, pressing into the feet all over. It works wonders!!
Also, in the old days, folk had a warm glass of milk before going to bed. That is also a help! Plus - a very comfortable bed. Ooooo ... that works wonders!

 for you. This is a great thread with lots of ideas what to do when thoughts come into your mind- click here.

Also, when sleep is difficult, there are things you can try. Make sure your bed is comfy and there are no distractions in the room like the TV. Make sure you're not having a lot of things like tea, coffee, cola drinks as they can help keep you awake, and dont exercise last thing to try and make you tired as it has the opposite effect.
When I have difficulty sleeping, I try and visualise something calm in my head, like a seaside scene, and place myself there. Or I imagine myself surrounded by the love of God and let a few words of a Psalm drift through my head- this one in particular
Psalms 4:8
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
:groupray: for you!

I am not sure if you have ever SIed or not. If you are getting the thoughts and you have never done it...then I would say...talk yourself through it. Ask yourself...why am I wanting to do this...what will it accomplish? There is always an underlining reason why someone wants to hurt oneself. If you have done it before, then you have programed yourself that this is the only way to cope with life....and you must take other steps to stop yourself. I held onto a piece of ice until it melted...that worked great at first. When that stopped working...I had to find other measures to keep myself from hurting myself. It has been now almost 2 years...but my urges are still there. Stronger now than when I first stopped I think. Anyways...you can always find comfort, support, and advise here. We are here for you

Thank you Bams (your testimony was really great!). And thanks for the advice, Cats...and thanks everyone else too! Just thank everyone! lol I'm a little enthuastic... But really, I'm so happy to get all this overwhelming support just through the Internet. And Bams your right...I have never SIed before. (Everyone gets hurt...I'm not sure if I've ever intentionally done anything 'seriously' harmful before.) I believe when I posted this I was particularly feeling suicidal. Although now the thoughts have very much subsided. I'm still struggling with my depression/emotional state and I'm sure I will be for awhile. I love being able to post on this forum. It's a great way to seek out support sometimes when you feel that other resources may not be available. Thank you for all of your advice. :)
