I grew up in Kansas where the cold night air would get trapped under a layer of hotter morning air. This causes the mirage effect here, where the light rays from farther objects are curved differently than light rays from nearer objects. Looking at the grain elevator in the next town over, it would appear to be floating on shimmering water, at least for a little while until the morning sun comes up and hits the lower levels of the air and warms them.
With some people it's hard to keep track of what crackpot conspiracy theories (completely lacking evidence) they believe and which ones (also completely lacking any evidence) they don't.Do you? Or am I to answer "Of course not, everyone knows the earth is flat"
However, it appears the explanation is actually a rare type of mirage called Fata Morgana. It’s essentially an optical illusion caused by specific weather conditions bending light rays.
Light Refraction. As light passes between mediums with different refraction indexes, it bends. Layers of air with different temps have differing refraction indexes. The water tends to make a layer of air different temp than the air higher up. In this case, it's a superior mirage, which means the layer of air above the water is colder than the air higher up.
