Is it ok to use bad words (Other than using the Lord's Name in Vain or cursing ("damn you!") if no one hears it?

I just had this conversation with my 17 year old!! He said there is nothing wrong with using the s or f or a words or any of those other lovely words...He said it is not using the Lord's name in vain...Well I told him that I don't want him using it, so that makes it wrong. And he argued with me about it saying it is not wrong and I said it is though....because the 4th Commandment is Honor your father and mother...and I don't like those words!!;)

And of course I can't say those words either, because my mom doesn't like them either.

It's not the best language to use, and the habit can be hard to break. Sometimes I use bad words (such as the f-word and things like that) but I do my best to not use them too often! Usually, my friends and I say "frig" instead of the f-word. But this reminds me of something funny that happened to a friend of mine - he is a seminarian so everyone expects him to be super-holy. Well, one time when he was giving a talk at a church gathering about a pilgrimage he did, he accidentally said "ass". We all giggled and he put his hand up to his mouth as if to say "oops..." and then he said "God still needs to work on me!"

I have another friend who swears like a sailor. But, since she works with children, she has to restrain herself quite a bit. Except it seems she makes up for her restraint by letting the profanities fly whenever our friends are hanging out together!

I wonder is saying "D--N brick fell on me." if that is cursing?

I mean it is a brick, so it shouldnt be a curse??

I have tried to curb my language...it slips out when I am talking to friends sometimes.. :sorry:

BUT not often.

I was actually just talking to my mom on the phone and I told her about this thread and she said something that made a lot of sense!!!

If it is something you wouldn't say if you were face to face with Jesus, it shouldn't be said at all. ;)

No. The point is not whether or not a person hears, but whether or not you say it. We should not be cursing other people.

What if you're not cursing someone but are instead saying it out of frustration at your computer or something?

Amen Sis.. I think of these two verses.

Col. 4:6 Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.
and
Mark 7:20
And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.. Meaning these things are in the heart..
Pax..Kim
