vows

Hey, er, are vows still valid or has that been done away with? I told God that if he answered a certain prayer of mine I would never read a certain kind of book again (not a bad kind or anything). Just wondering, cause Jesus did say he would never drink wine again until he drank it with his disciples in heaven.

First of all , Jesus was not making a vow in that - He prophesied .

Second , bribing the Lord isn't a good idea . Why would He trade you something for your not reading a certain kind of book , anyway ? ( especially if there was nothing wrong with it and He didn't tell you to stop ? )

I would suggest that you not do things that the Lord told you to stop . And , I would suggest that you simply ask the Lord for those things you desire - but , with no strings attached . Christianity is about a relatioship .

I doubt He was talking about actual wine, remember Jesus spoke in parables, and with out one He did not speak, the whole Bible is a parables, which is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning.
You can'nt make deal's with God, who are we to do so? we are the creation He's the creator.

if the book is bad you shouldn't be reading it anyway, and if it isn't then why give it up? God isn't a salesman who we have to bargain with. If you need something just pray. love doesn't expect a return favour and nor does God.

As stated above, asking is better than vows. Vows are important. To me they are promises, and if not kept, then that is disappointing and reflects badly on the one who made/broke the vow. It's nice to express gratitude via sacrifice and discipline (ex: giving up those books that keep you from doing more constructive things) but it's unwise to try to bargain with God for favors. There is a difference.

"When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow. It is better not to vow than to make a vow and not fulfill it. Do not let your mouth lead you into sin..." (Eccl. 5:4-5)

I am not clear what your question is.

Is it:
1) If I make a vow, I should keep it;
2) Something in the world changed, to void all vows;
3) That the "Church" has forbid people to take REAL vows;
4) Did Jesus outlaw vows? ... or void all vows?
5) Something else althogether?

I would say that SOME vows are alive and well.
In each Wedding ceremony, the bride and groom make vows to each other.

And, priests and nuns take their vows.

So, what are you asking?
When I find out, I might weigh in with my thoughts on it.
