When you're not a registered voter, will you still be fined? I was told that if I'm a registered voter and I didn't vote, I will have to pay. Forgive my ignorance. This is my second year in Australia and I was raised overseas.

That said, you really, really should vote. we have a pretty good system that lets us prioritize our opinions on who represents us.

Not voting doesn't remove the fact that someone speaks for you in parliament... it just removes your ability to give your opinion on who it should be.

You won't get fined for not voting as long as you're not enrolled, but please keep in mind that it's the law that all legal adult citizens of Australia must enroll to vote, and from that point onward, they must vote at every election. They don't seem to do much if you don't enroll, but it's still the law and there's no point breaking it for the sake of not wanting to take three minutes out of your day occasionally. Voting is mandatory in Australia. Also, a belated welcome to the country!

I don't feel like voting when I don't know who to vote for. Of course, I'm not ditching elections forever. Maybe I need some time to get used to the Australian system and parties first. I'll vote in every election after this.
