  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Well according to Leviticus 19:28 it would most likely be considered spiritually unproductive:
Lev19:28 “‘Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord.

Is this really that complicated?
It is no more or less permissible for the Gentile Christian than eating pork products, wearing cotton-polyester blends, or washing dishes on Saturday. As Tiredknight pointed out, see Acts 15:28-29.

I don't have any, though I have serveral I would LIKE to get. I probably won't because a) I want them in a place I can see them b) I want them to be coverable c)what is left are places no one but my hubby can touch and d)I'm too cheap.

However, that being said. Do I think God loves them....maybe not. Do I think they can be a great way to open an opportunity to give your testimony and lead someone to Christ...of course! Will God kick you out of Heaven because you have some? Doubtful.

I think it's between you and God.

I'd like to add, the Bible also says women should not wear clothing that resembles that of a man. I have many friends that live by this and wear skirts 24/7. I however, just can't bring myself to do it. I work in an occupation that a dress would be a hinderance (at least that's my excuse) though women did it hundreds of years ago. Sooo I guess who's to cast a stone? I don't know many women that abide by that law.

I have 7. Havent gotten any since I got saved but I would like to. What are your views on tattoos? Do you have any? Did you get any after you became a Christian?

no worries getting tattoos. Jesus looks at the heart, not the outer gear. xoxo

" 10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11 What goes into a man’s mouth does not make him ‘unclean,’ but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him ‘unclean.’ ... 17 “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man ‘unclean.’ 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what make a man ‘unclean’; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him ‘unclean.’” Matthew 15:10-11, 17-20.

I think this verse would apply just as much to tattoos. What is God worried about? Not whether you have artistic designs on the outside of your body, but what is coming out of your heart and how you are treating other people.

That said, I hope to have tattoos one day, but it will probably be a loooong time before I get them. First off, because I don't want a crappy artist doing the job, it's probably going to cost a fortune. Second off.... okay, so maybe there isn't as much of a second off; it's mainly just a money issue.

You can't change the ones you had before you came to God but for the future, you can.

The Law strictly forbids them!

Your body is a temple

Sorry but you are not looking in the right direction regarding that verse in my opinion.

Everyone always quotes Lev 19:28 but in that same chapter is says not to cut your hair but everyone does that. So why is tattoos wrong but cutting your hair is fine? Thats what I dont understand.

It's not hard to understand. People like to use out-of-context scriptures to try to impose their personal convictions, or even tastes, on everyone else. Talk to a man with a very conservative view of femininity about whether it is right for a woman to cut her hair and you may find that he considers that part of the chapter to be a valid moral commandment, too. But until that same person does everything else in the OT law, including the stoning to death of disrespectful children; and also convinces me that I should prefer that system to Grace and liberty in Christ, I won't listen to those people. Jesus Christ is my lawgiver; not Moses, St. Paul, the President or Congress of the United States, a pastor, or any other human being. And Jesus prefers mercy to sacrifice.

I don't have any tattoos but I'm planning on getting one within a few months: an ichthys with a chi rho inside. It will be on my right wrist, facing so that it is right-side up from the perspective of someone shaking my hand.

Read Leviticus

Here is the thing, Christians aren't bound by the OT anymore. They don't have to follow it's laws and overall, they don't apply anymore.

many think me prudish and 'a prisoner to the law' but i believe the God of the OT is the God of the new. Leviticus 19:28. i don't believe it is God's best for our bodies.

i don't think it taints us spiritually, nor does it affect salvation. but i don't believe it's God's best for us. and just on a health standpoint. the ink is constantly a toxin running through our blood streams for our liver and kidneys to filter out. i truly believe they tax our bodies in an unnecessary way- albeit a way we can't see. i think God knew what He was talking about and still does. it's the way of the pagans, man.

It's an issue I don't see as fundamental. I don't have any, I never intend to and I don't particularly like seeing them on other people, but I have seen ones on people that proclaim Christ and I'd stop short of condemning that.

(I saw a girl in some hot springs in Colorado with "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. - Philippians 4:13" across her back. I plucked up the courage to ask her why she chose it, and she said "I just liked it.")

There could also be an element of witness to it. Like Christians being noticed for not swearing or not getting drunk, with tattoos being so popular, we might be asked why we don't want any and that could lead to talking about how contented we are with how God made us.
