  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I don't have any tattoos but my nephew and cousin do. They seem to be addictive because every time I see them they have a new one.

As far as whether or not they are a sin, in the Old testament God didn't want the people of Israel to get tattoos in remembrance of the dead because it was a practice of the heathens.

Lev 19:28 KJV - Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I [am] the LORD.

I dont know that it means tattoos are necessarily a sin today though.

I have one, a cross on my hand. It was a decision made during a life crisis and I have no regrets.
It's to remind me everyday that God will never turn away or leave me. If this distance I feel grows it is only because of me.

Most everyone who ask about why I got it don't, and will never, understand. This is fine with me as I say flatly "it's not there for you"

Now that I've one I want more. I've always liked ink but I am afraid that I may grow tired of what ever I get.
For me it has to have meaning and a story behind it as a tattoo is nothing more than a coloured scar. And scars tell stories.

I got both after receiving the Lord. They both are part of my life's story and they both point to Christ. The first one I got I designed a cross out of my kids names. My daughter's name is Barbara which is the vertical pole and my son's name is Frank used for the horizontal pole. The cross shares the same (a) in both of their names to link it together. The second tatt I have I also designed is a broken heart with a flower growing out of the crack. The heart is wrapped by Jesus' crown of thorns as to bind the heart back together. I have Isaiah 61:1-11 inscribed over it. I think the scripture sums up the message of the tatt well.

I have a bird from my family crest tattooed on my back shoulder that I got when I went to a traveling tattoo convention with one of my good friends about 5 or 6 years ago. I didn't put much thought into it. We just thought it would be fun to get one.

I don't have any opinion on tattoos in general, but I actually wish I didn't have the one I do. I should have picked something else. What's done is done, though.

Everyone always quotes Lev 19:28 but in that same chapter is says not to cut your hair but everyone does that. So why is tattoos wrong but cutting your hair is fine? Thats what I dont understand.

That is one of many laws given explicitly to Jews for the purpose of setting them apart from non-Jews. Jewish tradition holds that there are some rules for everybody to follow, and more rules for Jews to follow. The prohibition on tattoos is in the second category, the Laws of Noah do not include it. If you were not born Jewish, or if you have never converted to Judaism, you are not bound by this law (also see Acts 15:28-29). If anyone considers themselves to be a Messianic Jew, they should be responsible about who/what they say they are and abstain from tattoos.

I personally have the freedom in Christ to get a tattoo, since I am 100% Gentile. I don't have one, because I do not want to get a tattoo just to get one, like so many in my generation have done. I look good enough without a tattoo, and while sleeve tattoos are pretty cool, I am completely satisfied without one. I am not inspired in the least to get one, and people should only get one if they have a truly lasting inspiration to get it.

That's why I said it doesn't necessarily mean its a sin today. However, they were part of pagan practices in those days, so its clear God doesn't want us to imitate to ungodly.

I feel that much of the Levitical laws narrow down to one simple phrase "don't do what the pagans are doing". Just follow that, and you mostly hit and follow near every law there.

Tattoos? Don't get one in mourning like the pagan did, is what it boils down to.

[Maybe too simple? I don't honestly think so.]

I love tattoos. Sure, opinions on this are divided, but I haven't met one Christian yet who says it's a "for sure 100%" sin for everyone(as my friend puts it). Which is really surprising with all the stuck up people here that hate them. Best answer I've gotten is it's only a sin if your reason for getting them is something ungodly, or something like that.

There is a certain verse in the Old Testament on tattoos, I believe. It may have been mentioned in this thread before, but that is my basis for opposing them. I don't think Christians should get tattoos, but at the same time, they wouldn't prevent the Christian from salvation. It seems that tattoos were never a part of Jewish culture, and I don't think Christians should partake in this global practice. There are countless other cultures that accept or emphasize some tradition of tattoos, but it was never a part of Judaeo-Christian culture unless I'm misinformed.

I find tattoos an interesting thing. When some people say "definitely not ok for a Christian" and then you see someone with a cross or other Christian symbol tattooed on them.

Personally, I don't know, but I have read that the part in Leviticus applied then and not now. But I am no expert so would never say that that is totally correct as I need to learn more.

I do like the look of some tattoos though, and have considered one for myself, but I don't think I would ever really get one
