How come then, that the practice of science has solved so many problems of medieval London, which in turn made 21st century London possible?

Give me an example of a "problem" that was solved by christianity and in a better way then science could have done it or has done it.
But should we be going to Mars in the first place?
I would say, yes.
First, because we'll learn a lot about the solar system. Things we can't learn from down here. Even things about our own planet.
Second, maybe you should review all the technology and knowledge that was made possible by space travel. You might be surprised.
But in any case.... what does that have to do with anything?
