video file format converters?

Was wondering if anyone could make a specific recommendation for a reliable converter. All of my video is in Sony .m2ts format, and the stupid Sony software won't convert it to .mpeg3 or 4.

There's all kinds of stuff online, but I'd prefer to load something I know is clean.

The first thing you need to ask yourself is "what's my target?"

Are you planning on just watching this on your computer, turning it into a DVD that can play on any standard DVD player, put it on an iPhone/iPod/PSP/whatever, or something else? The initial step, getting the file into an editable format, is very simple (if a tad involved), but prepping it correctly and then encoding it into the right format for your needs is more tricky. At least, if you want to do it and retain the absolute highest quality you can.

I use mpeg stream clip and hand break but not sure if .m2ts files will work.
