• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi, if anyone has any insite or experience with Vicodin withdrawl please help.

I am ashamed to admit it was prescribed for pain, but because it helped with my depression and anxiety, I abused it for 2 months, maybe 2 - 4 a day.

Now I am trying to quit cold turkey, I am having severe anxiety, is this normal?

Any prayers or advice would help

God bless

yes thats completly normal. not only did you have a physical addiction but a mental addiction witch can allot of times be stronger. The best thing in the long run is to not substitude this withdraw with another addiction such as weed or whatever. For the meanwhile though to regain balance i would reccomend eating something do a work out (to get feel good drug in your head pumping) because your body is basicly re adjusting to not having that excessive release of that feel good chemical in your brain from the opiots. Stay possitive ! dont dwell on your anxiety. Yes its good to figure out logically what to do next but dwelling on anxiety withdrawing or not for more then a few minutes will lead to just becoming more depressed. I hope ive helped some.. When the thought of the pills comes up turn away focusing on it will make it worse dont give it place in your mind. turn away from it. In general though i would seek jesus.

Balance is key for anxious people such as ourselves. Let yourself know your worth it, because yes you are ! I know thats hard for the self critical type person but it is completely essential

Yes, it is normal; and no you shouldn't quit cold turkey. However, the worst of it will pass after 48 hours. I've counciled men who've used opiates for years and it is the hardest addiction to break through. I've seen men throw away their marriages, family relationships, jobs, and dreams for this particular addiction. If you are quitting cold turkey, you need to let your doctor know. Have a check up asap.

Quitting an opiate cold turkey will involve a physical withdraw. It may feel like you have a cold or even the flu if it's really bad. It depends on how long you were on and the dose you were on. Anxiety, sweating etc. It's about 3 days after the first 24 hours without for the worst of it then it gets better until about a week when it's finished. What helps is hot baths, you will hate it but exercise especially until you break a sweat because you need to sweat that stuff out. Drink tons of water so you can flush your system. Hot tea helps. If your appetite goes away try chicken broth or soup and Ensure type drinks.

Hopefully it will just be a mental detox and the physical won't be too bad. I'll pray you have a quick safe recovery and it would be good to get counseling for the issues that made you start using the pills to cope with your stress. THen you can learn other ways of coping with your feelings and stresses. Talk to your close friends and family about your feelings. Just get out how you feel and pray a lot.

I hope this helps a little you have a battle you can face it with God. God bless you!

Thank you so much for your replies, I have experienced most the withdrawl symptoms a lot of you have mentioned, and I am starting to feel better, though like someone mentioned the sadness is bad, I am seeing a doc, and he has given me some meds.

All of you have touched my heart emotionally, that you took a few moments of your day to reply....may God bless all of you.

Yes it is normal. If you are not under medical supervision while you are withdrawing I highly recommend that you contact your doctor as soon as possible. He/She can help you do this in the safest possible way. I am praying for you.

I have been in your shoes. I was prescribed a plethora of narcs: Vicodin, Oxycontin, Percocet, and Morphine for my various back issues - degenerative disc disease, bulging discs, torn discs, spinal stenosis, etc.

What I did is, when I finally admitted that I had a problem with them, was looked on the net for the different ways to treat the addiction. Anxiety/Depression was rampant and was horrible due to the withdrawls from the opioids, but, my Dr. has put me on Suboxone and have been on it for over 2 years now, almost close to 3 and its been good to me.

Maybe your Dr. can decide if Suboxone is right for you - now I sound like an infomercial. Here is the site to go to - suboxone.com/ - I cannot post links yet, but soon I will be able to and despite other people saying it didnt work for them, its evil, etc, it worked for me and Im glad I came across it and with the co-pay card the Dr has and will give it to ya if they are one of those that can prescribe it, it should be free. I do not pay anything for my Suboxone at all monthly

Tapering is a great way to overcome it. Me, I was taking sooooo much that tapering it wouldnt of worked. What I am really surprised by is how God let me live despite all the times, due to the amount I was ingesting, you would of thought I would of overdosed - but never had that happen - God protected me from that and I am so thankful for that because so many people get caught in the cycle of addiction and abuse of it and sadly, some do succumb to death.

It always started, for me, with one and it works so after my body getting used to it, I needed more of it.....to the point where I would take 10 at a time just to feel normal and throughout the day, take even more or mix it with the other pills I was given - morphine, percs, and oxy.

There were times when I would stumble, but, that is life and we all succumb to that in different areas of our lives, but God is the one that allows us to move forward if we just give everything to Him - letting go control of our lives and giving our all to the Creator.

Thankfully now, my Dr. has got me on a good regimen of medication to control the issues with my back and the nerve pain - Lyrica - 1 pill, 75mg, 3x a day, along with my Suboxone film - 1 film under the tongue 2x a day and then of course my blood pressure medication :) After all the abuse I put myself through, my Dr and I were very surprised that my kidneys and liver are A-ok and no damage to them was shown - all praise to God....for it was He who did all of that for me :)

There is also a great site to go to called In The Rooms - Addiction, Alcoholism - In The Rooms - Drug Addiction Treatment - its a site made by and for people who are addicted, going through treatment or just staying sober and through the interaction with everyone on the site, it does indeed work and most importantly, its FREE to sign up. They have live streaming events where people come together and talk about what they are going through, tips, advice, etc - a really nice community of people :)
