When I was expecting my son in 1994, my inlaws were horrified that I was to maintain my veggie lifestyle. They told me that the baby would suffer - but imagine their surprise when he arrived at a very healthy 9lbs!!

These days, his shoes are too big for me ;-)

Nice! I was wondering how women maintained their vegetarian diets throughout their pregnancies - it looks like it can be done with success for both mother and baby!

It can indeed- my mother has been vegetarian since she was 18, and since then she's brought up 6 healthy, vegetarian children! :D

Yup, I did the veg pregnancy thing recently too. Happily, I had the support of family and friends (maybe the ones who were unsure were sick of getting lectures on nutrition! :D ). I had far fewer problems than a lot of non-veg people I know... no iron deficiency, no glucose tolerence problems, etc. I did end up in hospital for a couple of weeks, but that was because of a congenital heart problem, not diet :) (then half my ward-mates wanted to turn veg temporarily so they could have the same meals... :D )

People will make fun of - or shun! - things they don't understand, or that make them uncomfortable. Some Christians believe that it's wrong to not eat meat - I believe they've either listened to wrong teaching and not researched it, or misunderstood Paul's writings about meat sacrificed to idols.

From a christian viewpoint, I don't think vegetarianism is morally superior. But I think there's a fair amount of biblical justification for vegetarianism as a choice of diet. Going back to Genesis, where Adam and Eve seem to have been vegan (ie, before the Fall, strict vegetarianism seems to have been the norm). Skipping ahead to Daniel, where Daniel and his friends eat 'only vegetables' for three years while training to become court officials. And looking at Revelations, where there will be 'no more death' ... probably vegetarian diet there, too! It certainly can't be argued that vegetarianism is on God's list of sins - although if done with a prideful heart, chances are he won't be too impressed.

Yeah, people do mock vegetarians and/or make rude comments. What irritates me is the incessant lecturing I get from people who don't know anything about nutrition and think I'm depriving myself. If they read my shelf full of nutrition books and still have concerns, then we'll talk!

Vegabletarian (what my lil bro calls it ;P) I've been made fun of for it though, has that happened to anybody? I don't care much it's just annoying, some people at church have actually shunned me for being a vegetarian.
I've copped flak from it. At a BBQ hosted by meat eaters (but with at least 3 vegetarians in attendance) I got "Vegetarians are just abnormal" and such...(they weren't aware at the time I was on eof the vegetarians ;))

I used to think it was only their ignorance, now I believe it is as much 'wanting to fit it with the majority' that makes some people eat meat. I feel sorry for them in a way.

I am not a vegan or a vegetarian but I host a foreign student who shuns eggs beef and pork. She will eat fish and chicken and some dairy products but prefers not to. I am interested in finding GOOD VEGETARIAN recipes.\ that aren't too complicated. Most I have tried aren't easy or good except a citrus cous cous. Also I have a question. What do you all think about the plethora of veggie based "meat altenatives" I have heard a lot of people have trouble with soy. Isn't this just another example of over processed non food.

I have tried a few things using the textured soy protein like Veggie Chili and it has worked well. But I guess I am looking for recipes that don't rely on acting like meat dishes if you know what I mean. Celebrate the vegetable. Jan
