  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Yes, I think that Voice in the Desert is appropriate as well. It reminds us of the Desert Fathers who gave up all they had for Christ. It also reminds us of the "spiritual" desert the Oriental Orthodox Church has managed to survive and thrive in. With a history of being severely persecuted and being relegated to second class status, the Oriental Orthodox have managed to stay faithful. The Oriental Church is truly an example of what Christ said," On this rock I will build my Church and the Gates of Hell shall not come against it."

May the Lord be praised!!!

Well, I guess we can use this thread to commemorate the Oriental Orthodox fathers.

Also, we should contemplate on what a "desert" means and what it means for us to be "voices in deserts."

For fathers, since I'm Coptic, I will commemorate the founding fathers of monasticism, St. Antonious and St. Paul the hermit.

God bless.

I guess I'll begin with a meaning to our title.

The "Desert" is the world, barren, dry, and dead. We are divine salts of God, given Grace to season the earth. When Elisha saw a barren land, he took a bowl of salt and spread it on a barren land. Naturally, it would do nothing but confirm its deadness. But miraculously, water appeared and flooded the land, and later it became green.

You see, the bowl is the Church. Elisha is a figure of Christ. Christ sanctifies the Church with the salt, her members and children in it. We are sent to barren land to nourish and flavor the earth. We are of a different salt, a miraculous salt making deserts to Paradises of Joy.

A desert is also quiet. Just as a small lamp would enlighten a dark room GREATLY, one little voice in the desert is easily heard and cannot be ignored.

We must commemorate the Holy Fathers who enlightened us as Voices in the Desert, fulfilling God's will to all who are barren and dead.

Please share your contemplations and thoughts on what it means to be "voices in the desert." And please share something about the holy fathers you wish to commemorate about them as VDers.

God bless.
